RADFORD, Va. – The Presbyterian College men's soccer team
leapt to a quick lead in its Big South Conference match at Radford on Saturday
night, but a pair of Highlander goals in the second half handed the Blue Hose a
tough 3-1 loss.
PC (3-9-0, 2-2 Big South Conference) matched Radford (6-2-3,
4-0-0 Big South) in shots on goal in the opening half, with four, before the
Highlanders pulled away in the second period.
Ignacio Monchetti (Montevideo, Uruguay) gave the PC an early
goal in the 16th minute. The sophomore curled in a corner kick for
his team-leading third goal of the year to put the Blue Hose ahead. Two of
Monchetti's goals this season have come as the first in the match.
Tyler Beadle (Douglasville, Ga.) performed yeoman's work on
Saturday, stopping nine shots, including six in the second half.
Radford's Bernardo Ulmo assisted on the Highlanders' first
goal and scored the team's third.
The Highlanders tied the match in the 38th minute
as a rebound from an Ulmo shot found Chel Ho Park Kim, who stuffed in the
chance for the equalizer.
PC enjoyed a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks heading into
halftime. Byron Quinatoa (Santo Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador) led the
squad with two shots while Matt Manter (Irmo, S.C.) and Monchetti each tallied
one.
Radford scored two goals in a five-minute span shortly after
halftime to take the win. Lucas Diniz struck first in the 53rd
minute by poking home a loose ball from close range and Ulmo followed 4:31
later by converting on his own blocked shot.
Beadle made four saves after the pair of Highlander goals to
keep PC within striking distance.
The Blue Hose return home to host Winthrop on Tuesday night
