Coleman Leads PC to 69-67 Win over Campbell

Al'Lonzo Coleman tied his career-high with 29 points but it was his block with eight seconds and his rebound with six seconds remaining that helped seal the Presbyterian College men's basketball team's 69-67 win over Campbell in front of 2,318 fans at Gore Arena this afternoon in Buies Creek, N.C.

PC improves to 10-13 overall and 4-9 in the Big South, while Campbell drops to 15-11, 9-5.

PC tied it up five times in the second half before taking its first lead at 10:37 off a basket by Khalid Mutakabbir to make the score 51-49.  It was short-lived as Trey Freeman knotted the game at 51-51 before Josh Johnson made it a three-point game with a three-pointer with 9:12 to go.

Campbell cut it to one-point with 5:57 remaining when Freeman hit a three-pointer as time expired on the shot clock and retook the lead, 60-58 with 4:53 on the clock, off a jumper and free throw the next possession by Darren White.

After a back-and forth battle that saw both teams trade leads, Johnson nailed a three-pointer at 2:16 to give PC the lead for good at 66-64

PC was up 68-64 before Freeman hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to make it a one possession game with 1:20 left in the game.  The Blue Hose were unable to score the next time down the floor, giving Campbell ball with a chance to win.  Freeman took the ball under the rim and went up for the lay-up but Coleman was there with the game-saving block to deny the basket.

McTavish grabbed the rebound and was immediately fouled with 6.2 seconds left.  He missed the front end of the one-and-one but Coleman came away with the clutch rebound and was subsequently fouled with 3.7 seconds on the clock.  He missed the second, giving Campbell a last ditch effort, but the Camel three-point shot hit off the rim, giving PC the two-point win.

While Campbell didn't lose the lead the entire first half, it was a battle as the Camels were unable to take more than a six point lead at any point.  Pc cut the margin to two on several occasions, the last off a three-pointer by Josh Johnson at the 2:02 to make it 26-28.

Campbell rattled off four unanswered to take the lead back up to six before Al'Lonzo Coleman, who had half of the team's first half points with 14, hit a lay-up with 22 seconds left to cut the margin to four, 28-32, at intermission.

Following Coleman and his team-leading 29 points and 12 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season, was Mutakabbir with 15 points and Miller with 14.  Leading Campbell was Freeman with 18 points and Eric Griffin with 17 points and a team-leading eight rebounds.

PC out-rebounded CU, 29-23, including an 11-3 advantage on the offensive end, which resulted in a 10-2 margin in second chance points.  PC recorded just five turnovers, compared to eight by the Camels.

PC was 10-of-16 from the free throw, while Campbell was just seven-of-14.  The Camels shot 60.0 percent, while PC shot 49.1.  The Blue Hose were seven-of-20 from beyond the three-point arc with the Camels six-of-12.

The Blue Hose return to Clinton, S.C., for the final two home games of the season with VMI Feb. 9 and Liberty Feb. 11.  Both games start at 7 p.m. and can be heard on the radio at 860-AM WLBG with the pre-game shows starting at 6:30 p.m.
