Blue Hose Volleyball Sweeps Bucs in Big South Opener

Three Presbyterian College volleyball players recorded double-digit kills to lead the Blue Hose to the 3-0 win over Charleston Southern in their Big South opener in Charleston, S.C.  PC won the three games by scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-13.

PC improves to 4-12 overall and 1-0 in the league, while CSU drops to 5-11 overall and 0-1.

Presley Mabrey, Allison Brown and Kelly Berryman all posted 10 kills apiece, while Elizabeth Miler added six.  Berryman, with just three errors, led the team in hitting percentage with .350.  Ashtin Frank added 36 assists while Mary Trimpe posted a team-leading 16 digs.  The Blue Hose hit 44 kills and recorded a .234 hitting percentage, compared to the Bucs who hit .101 with 30 kills.

Mabrey came out firing in game one, posting kills in PC's first three of four points.  Brown added another as the Blue Hose took the early 5-0 lead, forcing a CSU timeout.  A PC service error gave the Bucs their opening point but the Blue Hose continued to roll, extending its lead to nine, 10-1 before a kill by Meredith Parrot made it 10-2.  The two teams traded points off a kill by Brown and one by Sydney Tracy, to make it 11-3.

The Bucs rattle off three kills to help them cut the margin to eight at 14-6, before Berryman made it a nine point a game with a kill of her own.  Down 6-16, CSU capitalized on four PC miscues to help them to a 4-2 run to cut the margin to just six, 12-16.  After a quick timeout, the Blue Hose used a kill by Andrea barman and a CSU attack error to extend its lead to 21-12.

Two service aces and CSU was down by just seven, 15-21, before another kill by Berryman made it 15-22.  The Bucs picked up two points off two more PC errors to cut the margin to five at 17-22, before committing two more errors to give the Blue Hose game point, 17-24.  Mabrey finished the game, like she started it - with a kill - as the Blue Hose took the 25-17 game one win.

CSU opened game two with a kill, before PC rattled off three to take a 3-1 lead.  After a Buc kill, PC used a kill by Mabrey and two by Miler to take a 6-2 lead.  CSU fought back with a 7-3 run to tie the game at 9-9.  A back and forth battle ensued with both teams trading the lead.

A service ace by CSU's Kayla Klinger gave the Bucs a 16-15 lead before PC took its first timeout of the game.  The Bucs extended the lead to 18-15 off a kill by Siraya Windsor and a PC miscue, but Frank cut the run short with a kill to make it 16-18.  PC capitalized on a CSU error and Barman added a kills to knot the game up at 18-18.

Both teams traded point but it was PC that came out on top with kill by Mabrey and two by Brown to give PC the 21-19 lead.  Another Mabrey kill highlighted a 5-0 run as the Blue Hose led 23-19, forcing a CSU break.  A CSU attack error and a kill by Mabrey gave the Blue Hose the 25-19 game two win.

PC opened game two with back to back points to take the early 2-0 lead.  CSU responded with two kills to knot the game at 2-2.  PC opened up a 6-4 lead, taking advantage of a couple of Buc errors.  CSU rallied back, highlighted by a Davis kill, to tie the game at 7-7.

Tied 10-10, the Bucs used two kills by Kayla Klinger to take 13-11 lead off small 3-1 run.  CSU held the two-point advantage at for several points until a kill by Berryman and two CSU attack errors gave PC the lead again at 16-15.

CSU took the lead back at 19-18 off a PC attack error.  It was short-lived as the Blue Hose tied the game up again, capitalizing on a CSU service error.  PC took the lead back off a Miler kill, before CSU tied the game yet again off a PC attack error.

Berryman recorded back-to-back kills to give the Blue Hose the 23-22 lead before CSU took a timeout.  Frank's kill gave the Blue Hose game and match point at 24-22.  CSU made it 24-23, before Miler ended the game and match with a kill, 25-23.

PC next travels to Coastal Carolina Saturday, Sept. 22 for a 1 p.m. match.
