Andrea Barman posted her second career match in a row with a career-high 23 kills to help the Presbyterian College volleyball team hold on to the 3-2 win over Charleston Southern in Big South action tonight in Charleston, S.C. After taking the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-15, CSU won the next two, 25-23 and 26-14. PC came back to win the fifth and deciding set, 15-12.
PC improves to 8-18 overall and 6-4 in the Big South. CSU drops to 6-20, 0-10. The Blue Hose are next in Conway, S.C., Saturday, Nov. 2, to take on Coastal Carolina at 7:30 p.m.
Aside from her 23 kills, Barman recorded just three errors to pace the team in hitting percentage with a .465. Rachel Hall came away with 16 kills, with Kelly Berryman close behind with 10. The Blue Hose ended the match with 69 kills and 26 errors in 172 attacks for a .250. PC racked up 10 service aces, with Aubrey Dooley and Mary Trimpe leading with three apiece.
Trimpe led the team with 20 digs, with Ashtin Frank holding the assists lead with 53.
Erin Lavenice led Charleston Southern with 19 kills, followed by Meredith Parrott with 11. CSU posted 54 total kills and 24 errors off 166 attacks for a .161 hitting percentage.
Tied 11-11 in the first set, PC scored three straight to take a 14-11 lead. After CSU cut the margin to one at 14-13, the Blue Hose used kills by Hall and Barman to go back up by three, 16-13.
Trailing 18-15, CSU capitalized on two PC errors and a kill by Siraya Windsor to cut the lead to one, 19-18, before Tripp laced a kill to take the team back up to two, 20-18.
After the Bucs made it a one-point set at 21-20, CSU committed a service error, while Barman and Hall collected block assists to extend the set to 23-20.
Down 24-21, CSU used a kill by Klinger to stave off set point once and make it 24-22. That would be it as Barman's kill the next point gave PC the 25-22 win.
The Blue Hose only led by one, 10-9, in the second set, but a 9-1 run, highlighted by service aces from Frank and Halle Tripp as well as kills from Berryman and Hall, put PC up 19-11.
Leading 23-15, Frank recorded her second kill of the night to set up set point at 24-15. A block by Barman gave PC the 25-15 second set win.
Neither team could gain a foothold in the third set, with 12 ties and 21 one-point margins. PC took a 23-22 lead off a Hall kills, but it was CSU with the next three points in a row, capped off by a Lavenice block and kill, to take the 25-23 third set win, avoiding the sweep.
The Bucs held a 13-10 lead in the fourth set, before PC rattled off three straight points coming from a Hall and Tripp kill and a Mikayla Register ace, to tie the set at 13-13.
The Blue Hose took the lead on several occasions the remainder of the set, including at match point 24-23. A Windsor kill knotted the game at 24-24 before a PC error gave CSU set point at 25-24. A Katrina Houston kill gave the Bucs the 26-24 win to force set five.
After CSU opened the fifth set with a kill by Houston, the Blue Hose went on a 7-3 run, highlighted by three kills from Hall, to take a 7-4 lead. Trailing 10-7, the Bucs rallied with a 3-1 run to cut the PC lead to one, 11-10.
Hall answered with a kill to give PC the two-point advantage. After a Houston kill cut the lead to one again at 12-11, the Blue Hose scored the next two of three points to set up set and match point. Barman ended the match with a kill off the Frank assist to give PC the win.
