Rachel Hall, Halle Tripp and Kelly Berryman combined for 34 kills to lead the Presbyterian College volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-22) win over Charleston Southern tonight at the Templeton Center in the Big South opener for both teams.
The Blue Hose, 3-13 overall and 1-0 in the Big South, are next in action when they host the Chanticleers Saturday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m.
Hall and Tripp both recorded 12 kills with Tripp taking the hitting percentage honors with a .346. Berryman finished with 10 kills, while Ashtin Frank posted a team-leading 35 assists. Mary Trimpe led the Blue Hose in digs with 15.
The Blue Hose recorded 48 kills for a .231 hitting percentage, while the Bucs were held to 27 kills for a .106.
Charleston Southern was led by Erin Lavenice with seven kills and Kayla Klinger with six.
The Blue Hose never trailed in the first set, leading by as much as nine, 17-9. The Bucs rallied to within four, 21-17, off an 8-3 run, but PC responded with a successful attack from Tripp, who had seven in the set, and back to back kills by Berryman, scoring the game's final four of five points to take the 25-18 win.
A closer second set, the two teams were knotted at 12, and again at 16. Andrea Barman's kill made it 17-16 and started a 9-3 run to give PC the second set, 25-19, win. Hall and Berryman recorded five kills apiece to lead the winning effort.
Charleston Southern opened the third set with a 17-9 lead, before the Blue Hose mounted a tremendous comeback with a 12-4 run to tie the set at 21-21. Leading the charge was Tripp with three kills and Hall with two. PC held the Bucs to just one more point, using kills by Hall and Berryman to take the eventual 25-22 set three and match win.
