Strong Second Half Lifts Marshall over Blue Hose

The Thundering Herd shot over 50% in the second half, breaking open a one-point halftime lead, to take the 77-49 win over the Presbyterian College men's basketball team this afternoon in Huntington, W. Va.

The Blue Hose, who drop to 4-11 on the year, host Winthrop Jan. 8, at 7 p.m., at the Templeton Center. Marshall improves to 6-9.

Leading PC was Jordan Downing with 18 points and seven rebounds, with William Truss following with 13 points and five boards.

Ryan Taylor paced Marshall with 18 points and 12 rebounds for his double-double. Shawn Smith followed with his 16 points.

PC shot 32.8% for the game and was just one-of-13 from the perimeter and 10-of-15 from the free throw line.

Marshall finished 44.1% from the field and was nine-of-33 from beyond the three-point arc.

Turnovers were fairly even with PC coming away with one more, 12-11. The Herd held the rebounding margin, 50-32, and had eight more assists, 14-6.

Neither team shot relatively well in the first half with both the Thundering Herd and Blue Hose shooting in the mid 30s.

Tied 15-15, Marshall used a 9-2 run to take a 24-17 lead, its largest of the game, with 6:08 ticks left on the clock. PC scored seven unanswered, four coming from William Truss, over the next three minutes to knot the game at 24-24.

Marshall scored the next five of seven points to retake the 29-26 lead before a jumper by Dillard with 12 seconds remaining made it a one-point game, 28-29 at the half.

The Thundering Herd out-scored the Blue Hose 22-10 in the opening eight minutes, including a 9-0 run, to build a 51-38 lead. A lay-up by Truss ended the PC drought to make it 51-40 at 11:42.

Marshall's offense continued to click as it built a 17-point, 60-43 lead off an Austin Loop three-pointer with 7:13 to go.

Truss' lay-up at 7:55 made it a 15-point game again, 60-45. That is as close as PC would get as Marshall began hitting its three-pointers to take the 72-47 lead with 2:37 to go.

Shots continued to fall with Marshall coming away with the 77-49 win.
