CLINTON, S.C.- The Presbyterian College men's soccer team fell to the Winthrop Eagles 4-0 on Friday night at Martin Stadium.
The Eagles (9-2, 3-0 Big South) only led 1-0 at halftime, but they mustered three second half goals to extend the lead out of PC's reach.
Sam Schmidt scored the first goal of the game from the right corner of the box in the 28th minute on a crossing pass from Pietro Bottari on the left side. The goal was Schmidt's third of the year.
After halftime, Pol Sole scored his fifth goal of the season on a penalty kick due to a PC foul in the box.
Max Hasenstab scored in the 65th minute off an assist from teammate Nick Nova to extend the Eagles' lead to 3-0.
James Skonicki scored the insurance goal for Winthrop in the 79th minute off a pass from Jon Simic.
Ignacio Monchetti (Montevideo, Uruguay) and Mason Lewis (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) had two shots on goal for Presbyterian. Jonathan Turnley (Manhattan, Kan.), John Speed (Decatur, Ga.), and Matthew McManis (Greenwood, S.C.) also registered one shot on goal apiece for the Blue Hose.
Winthop finished the game with a 13-9 advantage in shots, as well as a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Johnny Archer (Charlotte, N.C.) recorded five saves in goal to take the loss for the Blue Hose. Guilherme Avelar registered seven saves in goal to earn the win for the visiting Eagles.
The Blue Hose will continue Big South Conference action when they host Longwood on Saturday Oct. 18. at Martin Stadium.
