Chanticleers Defeat Blue Hose

CONWAY, S.C.- The Presbyterian College men's soccer team was defeated by Coastal Carolina 2-0 on Tuesday night in Big South Conference play.

The No. 23 Chanticleers (8-3-0 overall, 3-0 Big South) outshot the Blue Hose 8-1 in the first half, but were unable to score until just shortly before intermission, much credit to the Blue Hose defense.

With 1:10 left in the first half, freshman Martin Melchor put Coastal Carolina on the scoreboard. Ricky Garbanzo knocked down a loose ball inside the box and touched it back to Melchor for the goal. The score was Melchor's second of the season.

Presbyterian goalie Johnny Archer (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) recorded five huge saves in the first half to keep the Blue Hose in the game.

After halftime, Melchor scored his second goal of the game with 6:01 left on the clock. Joel Perez and Kevin Le Bras had combo assists on the scoring play. After taking a pass back from Le Bras, Perez nudged the ball into the box to Melchor for his third score of the season.

Coastal Carolina ended the game outshooting the Blue Hose 16-1. The hosts also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks over PC. Jonathan Turnley recorded the only shot of the game for the Blue Hose.

Archer ended the game with six saves in goal in the loss. Mark Petrus did not record any save in goal for the Chanticleers.

The Blue Hose will be back in action on Friday night at Martin Stadium when they host Winthrop at 6 p.m. The Chanticleers will host UNC Asheville on Saturday afternoon in Big South Conference action.
