Campbell shot 61.5% in the second half, and used a 13-3 run late to break open a close game and take the 77-66 win over the Presbyterian College men's basketball team in Big South action tonight at Gore Arena in Buies Creek, N.C.
Campbell improves to 12-14 overall and 6-5 in the league, while PC drops to 5-21, 1-10. The Blue Hose return to Clinton Saturday, Feb. 15, to take on UNC Asheville at 7:45. The game will air live on ESPN3.
Jordan Downing led the Blue Hose with 18 points, followed by William Truss and Markus Terry each added 17 points. Reggie Dillard finished with 10. Truss pulled down a team-leading and career-high 18 rebounds for his ninth career double-double and eighth of the year.
Reco McCarter led Campbell with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Luke Moyer added 16 points, while Leek Leek added 14 and Kyre' Hammer posted 13 points on the night.
PC shot 48.1% for the game after shooting 55.6% in the first half. Campbell finished the game shooting 50.0% were nine-of-23 from the perimeter, compared to a four-of-15 effort for PC, all of them coming from Downing.
PC held the 36-31 advantage on the boards and had five more turnovers, 14-9.
Behind three three-pointers from Downing, PC led 17-11 with 12:33 left in the first half, until the Camels used an 8-1 run to cut the lead to just one, 19-18, at the 10:08 mark.
PC rebounded with an 8-2 run of its own over the next two minutes to take a seven-point lead, 27-20. Campbell began hitting on all cylinders with five straight baskets, including a three-pointer from Leek, to storm ahead to a four-point, 31-27 lead with 4:51 to go.
Six unanswered by the Blue Hose gave them a two-point lead again at 35-33, with 2:20 to go, before Campbell's McCarter ended the half with four straight to give the Camels the 37-35 lead.
Campbell outscored PC 9-4 to open the second half and took a 46-39 lead with 15:52 left. After PC cut the lead to three off Dillard free throws with 14:77 on the clock, Leek and Moyer hit back to back three-pointers to give the Camels their largest lead of the half to that point, 54-45, at the 13:01 mark.
A Hamer lay-up at 11:30 gave the Camels an 11-poiint lead before baskets from Truss and Downing cut the margin to seven with 10:12 to play.
PC cut the Campbell lead to four, 64-60, with 5:28 left, but it was all Camels the four-and-a-half minutes minutes as they outscored the Blue Hose 13-3 to take a 77-63 lead. Downing hit his fourth three-pointer with just under a minute to go, to make it an 11-point game at the end, 77-66.
