The Presbyterian College women's basketball team battled against Radford and took its first lead with 4:12 remaining in the game, and the Blue Hose then used an 8-0 run to surge to the 53-46 victory in Big South action tonight.
PC improves to 6-17 overall and 4-10 in Big South Conference action, while Radford falls to 5-18 and 3-11 in conference play.
Keyonna Allen led PC with 22 points, with Karlee Taylor chipping in 13, including a key three pointer late in the second half. Freshman Kaycie Reffner had a game-high nine rebounds. Two players scored in double digits for the Highlanders, with Ayana Avery scoring 16 and Rachael Ross tallying 13.
The Highlanders controlled the first half, leading by as many as 11 points in the closing minutes before halftime. The Blue Hose were 8 for 25 from the field in the first stanza, compared to Radford's 42.3 percent shooting clip. After closing the gap to three points with 4:55 remaining off of a layup by Aianna Kelly, 14-17, Radford hit four straight baskets to extend their lead to 11 points, 14-25 with 1:40 left. The Highlanders would take a 16-25 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
After trading baskets to start the second half, the Blue Hose battled back to trail by only six points, 29-35, at the 12:55 mark off of four straight free throws from Allen. After a missed Radford jumper, Allen came through again, hitting a shot to cut the lead to four points, 31-35. Two minutes later, Sherece Smith sank a layup to bring PC within two, 37-35 with 10:15 remaining.
The Blue Hose cut the advantage to one point after a three pointer by Taylor at the 9:20 mark, but Radford responded with a layup by Ross to go back up 41-38. PC, however, fought back and eventually tied the game off of a huge three pointer by Reffner at 6:40 to tie the game at 43-43. After the Highlanders hit a free throw on the other end of the floor, Noelle Carter made a layup to give PC its first lead of the game, 45-44, with 4:12 remaining in the game.
The start of an 8-0 run, the Blue Hose never looked back as a defensive stop on the other end of the floor gave the Blue Hose the ball back. Allen then grabbed a huge offensive rebound, which set up another three pointer by Taylor and extended PC's lead to four points, 48-44, with 3:01 left. Another basket by Allen and a free throw by Reffner capped off the run, giving PC a 51-44 lead with 15 seconds left in the game. The Blue Hose used another two free throws by Taylor to seal the win and take the 53-46 victory.
PC shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, helped by a 4 of 8 effort from behind the three point line. The Blue Hose held the Highlanders to only a 33.3 percent shooting percentage in the second half, and zero baskets from beyond the arc.
The Blue Hose are back in action on Saturday, when they stay on the road to face Longwood. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
