BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Presbyterian College men's tennis team suffered its first Big South Conference loss of the season as the Blue Hose came up short to the Campbell Camels on Saturday, 5-2.
PC moves to 19-4 on the year and 4-1 in the Big South. The Blue Hose head to East Carolina next to face the Pirates at 12 p.m. on Sunday. Campbell improves to 9-4 and 4-0 in the Big South.
Freshman Ben Kelley (Weaverville, N.C.) and Diego Manzanas (Madrid, Spain) each picked up singles wins on the day at the fourth and sixth flights, respectively. Kelley took down Rik Van Gerwen in a 10-point tiebreaker, 6-7, 7-6, 10-7, for his 15th win of the season. Manzanas also earned his 15th win by pushing past Steven Billington in straight sets at the sixth flight, 6-4, 6-3.
Campbell won all three doubles matches. Joel Roberts (Summerville, N.C.) and Rafael Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) fell at the top flight to Dominik Kaniewski and Adrien Rossignon, 8-5, and Ryan Miller (Norcross, Ga.) and Kelley dropped a second-flight match to Fernando Guillen and Van Gerwen, 8-6. At the third flight, Manzanas and Grayson Mills (Lilburn, Ga.) suffered their first loss of the season together in an 8-4 defeat to Jean-Marc Krone and Marthinus Visser.
In singles, Roberts played Rossignon to two tough sets in a 7-5, 7-5 loss at the fifth flight. Mills moved to 16-3 on the year after Guillen won a 7-6, 6-4 result at the top flight and Visser won over Berghaus at the second flight, 6-1, 6-4. Campbell's final win came at No. 3 when Kaniewski topped Miller, 6-1, 6-1.
