Spartans Shut Out Blue Hose 2-0

SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The USC Upstate Spartans defeated the Presbyterian College men's soccer team 2-0 on Saturday night at County University Stadium.

PC's record falls to 1-4-0, while USC Upstate improves to 2-3-1.

Marvin Schmiege scored both of Upstate's goals to lead the offensive attack for the hosts. Rinaldi Alphonse tallied five shots for the Spartans, while Schmiege and Taylor Scalera each had three shots. Upstate finished the game with 14 total shots and five corner kicks.

Schmiege's first goal came in 13th minute off an assist from teammate Leon Schwarzer.

Schmiege beat two defenders and buried the ball in the lower left corner in the 52nd minute to record his second goal of the game, his third of the season.

Presbyterian finished the game with 10 total shots and five corner kicks. Steven Huppe (Maggie Valley, N.C./Tuscola H.S.) recorded three shots to lead the Blue Hose offense.

Johnny Archer (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic H.S.) took the loss in goal for the Blue Hose. He allowed two goals and registered two saves. Connor Behrend (St. Simons Island, Ga./Glynn Academy) saw some time in goal during the second half. He made two saves.  

The Blue Hose will host Georgia Southern on Tuesday Sept. 23 at Martin Stadium. Game time is set for 6 p.m. PC will start Big South Conference play on Saturday Sept. 27 when they travel to take on the Radford Highlanders in a matchup scheduled for 6 p.m.
