Liberty Pulls Away from Women's Basketball, 59-42

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball team led early in its Monday night road contest at Liberty, but the Flames pulled away for a 59-42 win at the Vines Center.

PC moves to 7-7 on the year and 2-3 in the Big South. The Blue Hose return home to host Radford on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the first game of a PC hoops doubleheader that sees the men's team host Winthrop at 7:30 p.m. Liberty improves to 9-5 overall, 5-0 in the League and travel to Coastal Carolina on Thursday for a 5 p.m. tip-off.

Aianna Kelly (Newport News, Va.) led all players with a career-high 15 points, 11 of which came in the second half. Rebecca Walker (Snellville, Ga.) followed with 11 points while Elizabeth Landers (Greenville, S.C.) and Keyonna Allen (Forest Park, Ga.) split the rebounding lead with five apiece.

The Flames overcame cold shooting to open the game but recovered for a 28-21 halftime lead. PC ran into trouble inside as Liberty outscored PC 22-6 in the paint and scored 23 points off turnovers to PC's five. Jaymee Frazier-Davis led the Flames with 13 points. Ashley Rininger nearly posted a double-double with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds while Emily Frazier tallied nine points and nine assists.

PC stymied Liberty early in the game, taking a 5-1 lead into the first media timeout and holding the hosts without a field goal for the game's first 8:52. Walker scored the game's first three points on a slick bank shot three-pointer in the first minute. The Flames would eventually heat up, however, and go on a 10-0 run. Allie Wagner (Easley, S.C.) snapped the run before two long-range shots from Walker and Landers gave PC the lead back, but Liberty capped the half with a 9-0 run to take a 28-21 lead into halftime.

Walker hit a pair of three-pointers for a team-high six points at the break. The Blue Hose forced seven Liberty turnovers in the first half but the Flames held the edge on the boards, outrebounding PC 21-12.

PC chased Liberty's double-digit lead throughout the second half behind the shooting touch of Aianna Kelly. The sophomore scored seven of PC's points in a row and went 7-for-9 from the charity stripe on the night. The Blue Hose cut Liberty's lead to nine with 4:07 on a pair of Kelly free throws, but Liberty answered with a 10-0 before a Wagner bucket made it the 59-47 final tally in the closing seconds.
