Second Half Rally Propels VMI Past PC

Second Half Dooms Blue Hose Men?s Basketball

The Presbyterian College men's basketball team shot just 24% in the second half, while Radford rallied with 46.7% to take the 62-56 come from behind win Saturday night at Templeton Center in Clinton, S.C. 

PC falls to 9-18 overall and 5-9 in the Big South with a game up next at Charleston Southern on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The Highlanders improve to 19-8 overall and 10-4 in conference action. They host Coastal Carolina on Monday at 8 p.m.

DeSean Murray (Stanley, N.C.) recorded a double-double in his third straight 20-point game for PC with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Markus Terry (Johns Creek, Ga.) added 13 points for the hosts, while William Truss (Vestavia Hills, Ala.) and Jordan Downing (Huntersville, N.C.) evenly split 14 points. Truss also came up with eight rebounds.

The Blue Hose produced a 39.2 percent effort (20-for-51) from the floor and 3-for-17 from beyond the arc. PC was 13-for-17 from the foul line.

Javonte Green led the Highlanders with 15 points and seven rebounds. YaYa Anderson scored 14 points to aid the visitors, while R.J. Price and Cameron Jones had nine apiece.

The Highlanders mustered a 42.4 percent effort (25-for-59) from the field, 31.8 percent (7-for-22) from 3-point range, and a meager 5-for-12 from the charity stripe.

PC held a 38-33 rebounding advantage over Radford, but the hosts were on the higher end of turnovers with 20, compared to Radford's 14.

Green scored Radford's first seven points of the game to put his Highlanders up 7-6 with 16:32 to play. The visitors stretched their lead to six points, 15-9, with 11:21 left in the first, but PC worked hard to tie it up 19-19 a few minutes later. Murray slammed one home for PC's first lead since the first bucket of the game, 21-19, with 7:23 on the clock.

Anderson hit a three for the Highlanders to give the visitors back the lead, but Davon Bell scored three points and an and-one play to quickly take it back for PC. Anderson hit another jumper for Radford to tie it up, but Truss and Downing hit back-to-back treys and Janiel Jenkins (Jacksonville, Fla.) made a free throw to give PC a 7-point lead, 31-24 with under four minutes to play. Anderson and Murray exchanged jumper to close out the half and give PC a 33-26 halftime lead.

Murray led PC in the first half with 12 points, while Green and Anderson had seven points apiece for the Highlanders. PC and Radford evenly split 30 rebounds in the opening half.

The Highlanders opened the second half strong, taking a 38-37 lead with 14:01 to play. Murray stole back the lead for PC on a pair of free throws just seconds later. The hosts maintained a close lead until Price nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Highlanders a lead that the team would not relinquish.

PC would cut it to two points on two occasions and visitors would stretch their lead to eight points with 2:41 to play on 6-unanswered points. Terry would score the hosts' final four points of the game to help his Blue Hose cut it to five points with 33 seconds to play, but Price would make one of his two freebies to put it away for Radford in the final seconds.
