FARMVILLE, VA.- The Presbyterian College men's tennis team earned its first Big South Conference win of the season on Saturday morning when the Blue Hose beat Longwood, 5-2.
PC improves to 14-5 overall and 1-1 in conference action. The team will stay in Virginia through the weekend and take on Liberty tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Lancers fall to 2-11 on the year and 0-5 in Big South matches.
Despite losing the doubles point, PC fought back strong in singles play, winning the bottom five flights over the Lancers.
Daniel Elston and Steed Johnson defeated PC's No. 1 team of Diego Manzanas (Madrid, Spain) and Joel Roberts (Summerville, S.C.) by a score of 8-3, and Bharani Sankar and Alfonso Castellano knocked off PC's No. 3 freshman duo of Lukas Luckemeier (Greven, Germany) and Alexander Lykou (Aarhus, Denmark), 8-7.
Ben Kelley (Weaverville, N.C.) and Brandon Mills (Lilburn, Ga.) beat Florian Uffer and Rosen Ilchev at No. 2 doubles, 8-6, for a doubles win for the Blue Hose. The Lancers headed into singles action up 1-0.
Manzanas was PC's top finisher for the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Elston at No. 2 singles. Alejandro Bejar (Madrid, Spain) won in three sets at line 3 over Castellano, 6-1, 6-7, 7-6.
Mills got a win at No. 4 singles over Johnson 6-4. 6-2. Danny Bruce (Marietta, Ga.) also got a win in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, with his win over Sankar at line 5. Kelley bested Lachlan Manser at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-3.
Elston was Lancer's only singles victory of the day. He defeated Roberts at line 1, 6-3, 6-3.
