The Presbyterian College volleyball team opened its home season at the Templeton Center with a 3-0 loss to Wofford Wednesday night. The Terriers took the match with scores of 25-20, 25-22, and 25-18.
Wofford earns its first win of the season to move to 1-3, while PC drops to 1-3. The Blue Hose take to the road this coming weekend as the team participates in the Davidson Wildcat Classic in Davidson, N.C. PC faces East Carolina Friday, Sept. 4, at 4:30 p.m., before facing the Wildcats Saturday at 12 p.m., and Hampton Saturday at 4 p.m.
Leading the Blue Hose charge were Samantha Del Toro and Sierra Davis, both with nine kills apiece. Sara Rogers collected a team-high 30 assists, while Mikayla Register added 10 digs. PC notched a season-high .263 hitting percentage but could not stop Wofford, which came away with a .351.
The Terriers, led by Bella Santoro and Lauren Miller, both of whom had 10 kills each, recorded 44 kills, four more than PC, and had four less errors, 10-14. Wofford led the defensive charge with 8.0 total blocks, with PC posting 2.0.
After suffering through a 5-0 Wofford run that saw a two-point 18-16 Terrier lead push to a 23-16 margin and an eventual 25-20 first set loss, PC rebounded in the second and held a 14-11 lead midway through. Trailing 18-14, Wofford used two kills and two PC errors to tie it up at 18-18. The set saw three more ties, the last one at 21-21. The Terriers went up 23-21 before an Ashton Stewart kill made it 23-22. That would be as close as PC would get as the home team gave up a kill and block to drop set two, 25-22.
Wofford opened up a 10-5 lead and extended it to 21-13 before PC cut the margin to 21-16, helped in part by kills from Rachel Elshoff and Rogers. Three straight Wofford kills shot the lead back up to 24-16, before the Terriers settled on the 25-18 third set and match win.
