Johnson Paces Blue Hose in Victory Over Tornados

Clinton, S.C. - Trinity Johnson scored 18 points as the Presbyterian College women's basketball team defeated Brevard on Saturday afternoon at the Templeton Center, 74-45. Bria Gibbs (12 pts) and Jade Compton (10 pts) also finished in double-figures for PC, while the Tornados were led by Krysta Davis' 12 points and Destiny Williams' 10 points and eight rebounds.

Scoring The Game
Presbyterian jumped out to a 7-2 lead after a three pointer from Johnson with 8:24 in the first. Minutes later, Brevard cut the lead to just two points, 9-7, after a three from Shakirah Thompson at 4:09. However, PC replied with a 5-0 run with baskets from Alessia Capley and Johnson to restore a two-possession lead before the end of the quarter. After 10 minutes, Presbyterian led 16-9.

Both teams struggled offensively in the second quarter. Brevard shot 2-10 (.200) while PC shot just 2-14 (.143). Despite going cold, the Blue Hose entered the break up by double-digits, 27-16, after Gibbs added to the cushion with four free throws in the final 1:20.

Offense returned after halftime for both teams with Presbyterian shooting 5-11 (.455) in the third quarter, while Brevard shot 6-12 (.500). More importantly, PC improved on their 7-17 (.412) performance from the free throw line in the first half to sink 9-12 (.750) in the third and 6-6 (1.00) in the fourth.

Presbyterian College pulled away with a 15-0 run in the fourth capped by a pair of back-to-back layups from Gibbs to lead 64-36 with 3:49 to play. Shamani Stafford added a pair of threes down the stretch, as PC won easily, 74-45.

Players of the Game
Trinity Johnson scored a game-high 18 points to go with five rebounds and four assists. Destiny Williams nearly had a double-double for Brevard with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Notables 
- Trinity Johnson led the team in scoring for the seventh time this season and fifth consecutive game.
- Shamani Stafford was 2-5 (.400) from distance and connected on her first three-pointers of the season. The sophomore led the team with 71 makes a season ago while shooting 36.2%.
- Kacie Hall needs 49 more points to reach 1000 for her career.
- Presbyterian College committed a season-low of six turnovers. It was the fewest since the team had just six turnovers against Radford on February 18, 2017.
- Presbyterian College tied their Division I record with 35 attempted free throws and connected on a season-high 22.

By the Numbers
Presbyterian recovered in the second half to shoot 23-57 (.404) for the game compared to 14-44 (.318) for Brevard. The Blue Hose also led in rebounds, 40-33, points in the paint, 28-16, and steals, 10-0. The Tornados committed 22 turnovers, while PC had a season-low of six. The Blue Hose also capitalized on Brevard's turnovers by the impressive scoring margin of 32-5.
