Spartans Edge Blue Hose in Tight Contest

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Neither team held a lead larger than four points over the final two sets, but UNCG clipped Presbyterian College 25-20, 25-22, 25-22 in non-conference volleyball action on Saturday at Day 2 of the Spartan-Demon Classic at Fleming Gym.

 

Notables

-Sophomore Trinity Williams spearheaded the PC attack with seven kills, while junior Allie Wright posted six on a team-best .278 hitting percentage.

-Three Blue Hose registered double-digit digs, led by senior Erin Eulitz's game-high 18. Sophomore Lauren Talbert chipped in 16 and junior Caroline Henderson added 12.

-Sophomore Erin Cooke dished out a team-high 15 assists, while junior Sierra Jones added 13 helpers.

-PC posted nine blocks to UNCG's five, with Wright and freshman Paige Cairns leading the way with four apiece.

-The Spartans totaled six service aces to the Blue Hose four.

-Freshman Gracie Davis (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) made her collegiate debut and added four kills and a block off of the Blue Hose bench.

 

How it Happened

-The Blue Hose jumped out to a 5-2 advantage in the opening set, but the Spartans quickly responded to take the lead at 7-6. Following a tie at 11-11, UNCG took seven of the next 10 points to open-up an 18-14 margin, and led by no fewer than three for the remainder of the set.

-PC held a one-point edge at 15-14 in the second set before a 5-0 UNCG run put the hosts ahead 19-15. The Blue Hose countered with a 5-1 run to even the score at 20-20. After a deadlock at 21-21, the Spartans tallied four of the next five points to take a 2-0 advantage into the intermission. The second set featured 15 ties.

-UNCG snatched an early 7-5 advantage in the third set, but a 5-0 PC run moved the visitors in front 10-7. The Spartans quickly answered, evening the score at 11-11. Four straight points again put the Blue Hose on top at 16-13, but six of the next seven went to UNCG for a 19-17 edge. With the match even again at 22-22, the Spartans won the final three points to take the set and the match.
