Pirates Outlast Blue Hose For Overtime Victory

Hampton, Va. – The Presbyterian College men's basketball team could not overcome a 11-2 run by host Hampton to begin overtime as the Pirates earned an 87-81 overtime victory in Big South action on Saturday afternoon from the Convocation Center in Hampton, Va… Chris Martin led the Blue Hose with a career-high 24 points as he also grabbed seven rebounds. Cory Hightower added 14 points.
 
Scoring the game
The hosts got out to an early 10-4 lead over the first five minutes and were able to push it to 11 at 19-8 with 11:24 to play in the first half. The Blue Hose fought back and used a 14-2 run to take their first lead at a 22-21 lead at the 7:41 mark of the first half off of a Chris Martin layup. PC used a 9-0 burst over the next four minutes to push the lead out to 10, 31-21 with 3:40 to play in the first half. Hampton cut the lead to nine over the remainder of the half making it a 34-25 lead for Presbyterian at intermission.

PC came out fast in the second half making five of its first eight shots to lead by eight, 47-39 with 15:13 to play in the game. A Chris Martin layup pushed the lead to 57-47 with 10:46 to play. The Pirates used a 13-6 run over the next four minutes to cut the lead down to three, 63-60. PC was able to quickly push the lead back out to five before the hosts cut the lead down on two more occasions to three with the last coming at the 3:58 mark of the game. Martin hit a pair of free throws to push the lead back out to five, 71-66 with 2:47 to play before Hampton responded with a pair of free throws of its own to push the lead back down to three. The hosts used a layup and a free throw over the final 90 seconds to tie the game up and force overtime.

Hampton opened the extra session on an 11-2 run to open the OT to take a nine-point lead, 82-73 with 1:28 remaining in overtime. Owen McCormack connected on a three to cut it back to six before three Hampton free throws pushed it back to nine. Hightower connected on a three with 31 seconds remaining and following a quick Hampton turnover and Kody Shubert connecting on a pair of free throws it was an 85-81 game with 23 seconds to go. The hosts however connected on a pair of free throws down the stretch to secure the league win.
 
Players of the Game
Chris Martin paced the Blue Hose with a career-high 24 points, while adding seven rebounds and four assists. Michael Isler tied a career-high with eight rebounds. Jermaine Morrow led the Pirates with 31 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Davion Warren led all players with 11 rebounds.
 
Stats of the Game
Presbyterian held the Pirates to 33.3% shooting in the first half and held a nine point lead at intermission as the Blue Hose shot 39.4% from the floor. Both teams in the second half shot over 56% as Hampton was able to force the extra session shooting 56.3%. Hampton used the free-throw line in overtime as the separation as they made 12-of-17 in OT to lead to the win. The hosts led the rebound battle by three, 42-39. PC had 13 turnovers, to Hampton's 11. Presbyterian had a nine to two advantage in three pointers made. Hampton hit 29 free throws, compared to 14 for PC.

For the Record
PC falls to 8-15 overall and 5-5 in the Big South, while Hampton sits now at 10-11, and 5-3 in the conference.
 
Notables
Saturday's game was the first OT game for the Blue Hose since February 6, 2016 when PC dropped a 66-63 contest in Boiling Springs against Gardner-Webb.
Chris Martin had a career-high 24 points as he connected on eight field goals also setting a new career mark.
Martin also made a career-high eight free throws.
Michael Isler tied his career-high with eight rebounds. He also had eight boards at VMI earlier this season.
Sean Jenkins matched his career-high with 12 points.

The Blue Hose return home on Thursday February 6 for a matchup against Gardner-Webb with tip off set for 7 pm. The game will be shown on ESPN+ and broadcast on WPCC.
