Blue Hose Edged By Eagles In Tight Battle

CLINTON, S.C. – PC overcame a 12-point deficit early in the second half to take the lead but could not hang on down the stretch, as the Presbyterian College men's basketball team dropped a tight 89-88 decision against Winthrop in Big South action on Saturday afternoon. Chris Martin led PC with a career-high 26 points, with Michael Isler leading the way on the glass with six rebounds. 
 
Scoring the Game
The two teams stayed close in the early going with four ties in the opening four minutes leading to a slim one-point lead for Winthrop, 13-12 with 15:27 in the first half. Both teams remained tight with it staying at a one-point margin, 18-17 with 11:35 to play in the half. The Eagles went on a 13-3 run over the next five minutes to jump out to a 31-20 lead with 6:19 on the clock. Winthrop pushed it to a 13-point lead on multiple occasions with the last coming at 4:26 on the clock to give them a 38-25 lead at the under four media timeout. PC used a 9-2 burst to cut the guests lead down to six, 40-34 with 1:28 on the clock. The guests scored five of the final six points to take a 10-point lead, 45-35 to the intermission.

PC opened the second half on an 8-4 run over the first three minutes to cut the Eagle lead down to six, 49-43. Winthrop responded with an 8-2 run of its own to push the lead back out to 12, 57-45 at the 15:04 mark. The Blue Hose once again answered with a 16-2 burst over the next four minutes to regain the lead at 61-59 with 11:18 to play. During the stretch, Chris Martin had six points to lead the Blue Hose. Similar to the first half, both teams remained tight as they both traded mini-runs with no team leading by more than four and knotting the game up at 70 with 7:47 to play. Following an Eagle free throw, Martin connected on a three which gave PC the 73-71 advantage with 7:28 to go. The Eagles pushed out to a four-point lead, 80-76 behind a 9-3 run with 3:37 to play. PC evened it at 80 following a Kody Shubert layup with three minutes to play. After a quick 5-2 spurt from Winthrop, JC Younger tied the game at 85 with 51 seconds to play. Winthrop's Hunter Hale connected on a three to answer with 30 seconds to play and after a free throw by the Eagles it was a four-point game, 89-85. Shubert cut the lead to one, 89-88 however it would get no closer as the Eagles held on for the one-point win.
 
Players of the Game
Chris Martin led the team with a career-high 26 points as he shot 8-of-12 from the floor and made 9-of-12 at the charity stripe. Cory Hightower added 18 points, while Michael Isler had 13 points and a team-high six rebounds. Josh Ferguson led Winthrop with 17 points and six rebounds.
 
Stats of the Game
PC shot 65.4% in the second half to help shoot 55.8% for the game compared to 50% from Winthrop. Winthrop had a 39-28 advantage in rebounds, but had four more turnovers, 14-10. PC scored 22 points off of those turnovers, compared to 13 for the Eagles. The Blue Hose hit 25 free throws to the Eagles 18.
 
Notables
Chris Martin had a career-high 26 points, while tying a career-high of eight made field goals.
The 25 free throws made were sixth in the PC DI record book, the 37 attempts were fourth.
Cory Hightower had his fifth straight game with at least 14 points as he had 18 on Saturday.
It's the eighth time this season the Blue Hose shot at least 50% in a game.

PC falls to 9-18 overall and 6-8 in the Big South, while Winthrop improves to 19-9, 13-2.
