Stafford Paces Blue Hose in Setback at Hampton

Hampton, Va. - The Hampton women's basketball team held on to defeat Presbyterian College, 67-53, despite a fourth quarter rally that saw the Blue Hose trailing by single digits with two minutes remaining. Shamani Stafford led PC with a season-high 12 points. Laren VanArsdale paced four Pirates in double figures with 18 points.

Scoring The Game
After an early back-and-forth that saw PC leading 8-6 following a jumper from Trinity Johnson at 5:29, Hampton broke the game open with a 14-0 run that stretched into the opening moments of the second quarter. The Pirates led 22-8 following a three-pointer from MaKayla Timmons at 9:27. Kacie Hall and Stafford cut into the lead with back-to-back threes, and Johnson made it a six-point game, 25-19, with a pair of free throws at 6:03. However, the Pirates went on a 13-2 run over that span to lead 38-21 at headed into the locker room.

Hampton continued to press in the third quarter and grew their lead to as many as 24 points, 54-30, headed into the fourth. Presbyterian heated up in the fourth quarter, opening with an 18-3 run that saw the double-digit deficit cut down to just nine points, 57-48, with 2:12 remaining. Stafford scored nine points with three three-pointers during the run. Forced to foul late, PC sent Hampton to the line where they sank six free throws and held on for the 67-53 win.

Hampton's Nylah Young had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
