CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team wrapped up their season Saturday night against Gardner-Webb inside Martin Stadium, unfortunately falling to the Runnin' Bulldogs, 3-0.
FINAL SCORE: Gardner-Webb 3 – Presbyterian 0
RECORDS: Presbyterian (1-16-1, 0-9-1), Gardner-Webb (8-11, 5-5)
LOCATION: Martin Stadium
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Presbyterian had a good start to the game getting a lot of offensive zone time.
Sarah Dieffenderfer had a long-range effort from 30 yards out that bounced towards the corner of the net, but the Gardner-Webb keeper was able to get over in time. The Runnin' Bulldogs got chances of their own, but the Blue Hose still maintained the ball well through the midfield. Despite Presbyterian's strong start, Gardner-Webb scored the first goal of the game. They kept pressure after the goal as
Megan Serrano had to make a few diving saves near the 25-minute mark. Gardner-Webb would add a second however in the 33
rd minute. Presbyterian brought on some fresh legs as
Reyna Coston and
Caitlin Murphy had chances before the half ended the Blue Hose down 2-0.
It was another quick start for PC in the second half as freshmen
Gwen Keiser and
Megan Slattery both had good looks, but both were blocked to the side. Murphy had her second shot of the night blocked as Presbyterian was pressuring the Gardner-Webb backline. The Runnin' Bulldogs came back with a little pressure of their own, but the Blue Hose defense stayed together and prevented any good chances. Keiser had a shot in midway through the half as she searched for the bottom corner, but it was saved well. Just after the save, Gardner-Webb made their way down the field and put away a third past Serrano. That just about took the wind out of the sails from PC as Coston had one final attempt before the clock hit zeros as Presbyterian fell, 3-0.
Coach Purcell's Thoughts
"Tonight was about our seniors. Would we have liked to win the game…of course, but this was the opportunity for all of our seniors to be on the field and play one last time together as the Blue Hose. I am so incredibly proud of all the young women on this team who battled through adversity all year. We are sad that it's over, but we are also happy for the time we were able to spend together as a team."
