Football Makes Trek to Valpo for PFL Matchup

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College football team begins the final month of the 2021 regular season on Saturday with a trip to Valparaiso to face the Beacons at Brown Field as kick is set for 2 p.m.. Saturday's game will be shown on ESPN3.

Last Time Out
• The Presbyterian College football team dropped Saturday afternoon's matchup against Stetson by the count of 56-14 at Bailey Memorial Stadium in PFL action.
• Redshirt freshman Reagan Cherry recorded 10 tackles and has two pass breakups, while Delvecchio Powell and Jalen Jones each scored in the setback.
 
Witcher Watch List
• Presbyterian College football freshman wide receiver Jalyn Witcher has been named to the 2021 Stats Perform Jerry Rice Award Watch List on Wednesday afternoon. The award is presented to the national freshman of the year in college football's Division I subdivision.
• The Rice Award is in its 11th season in 2021 and is named for the 3x Super Bowl and legendary Hall of Fame wideout. Past recipients of the award include Los Angeles Rams wideout Cooper Kupp (Eastern Washington), Arizona Cardinals running back Chase Edmonds (Fordham), and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (North Dakota State).
• To be eligible for the Rice Award, a freshman can't have surpassed four games played in one previous academic year – similar to the NCAA's regular redshirt rule. More players can join the watch list before a 50-member, national media panel selects the winner following the regular season.
 
Opponent Profile
• Valparaiso comes into Saturday's contest with a 2-6 mark after falling 21-14 to San Diego last weekend. In their last home game, the Beacons defeated Dayton 45-28.
• Valpo is led on the ground by the Spring 2021 PFL Offensive Player of the Year Robert Washington. Washington has 810 yards of offense including 610 on the ground with eight touchdowns.
• Ben Nimz as the Beacons quarterback has four passing scores with 752 yards of passing thru eight contests.
• On defense, Valpo is led by Jaxon Peifer who has totaled 52 tackles including 6.0 tackles for loss this season along with 1.5 sacks and a pair of pass breakups.
• Evan Annis has 51 stops with 3.0 tackles for loss this season. Austin Chilton has totaled three interceptions while Jamauri Jackson has a pair of pick sixes this season.
• Washington is second in the PFL with his eight rushing scores and is second in total rushing yards in the league as well.
 
Blue Hose in the Ranks
• As a team, the Blue Hose sit second in all of FCS with 417.9 yards of passing on average thru eight games led by redshirt sophomore Ren Hefley averaging 365.8 yards/game.
Jalyn Witcher maintains his lead in all of FCS with 10 receiving scores and is sixth nationally with his 851 yards of receiving this season.
• Hefley is third in FCS in passing yards and passing yards/game thru eight contests.
• Hefley is also second in FCS with 28 passing scores.
 
Witcher Record Watch
• Freshman Jalyn Witcher currently is rewritting the history book in the DI era at Presbyterian.
• Witcher currently leads all single-season receivers in touchdowns with 10 scores. He is third in single-season receiving yards with 814 yards so far this season.
• Witcher has had five games with 100+ yards including a career-high 192 vs San Diego last Saturday.
• Amongst all FBS and FCS wideouts, Witcher is tied for second with 10 receiving toucdowns this season as only Jordan Addison from Pittsburgh has more touchdowns this season than Witcher with 11. No receivers in FCS have scored more touchdowns that the Little Rock native.
 
Receivers Racking Up the Yards
• The Blue Hose have had 25 different players record at least one catch which included 21 players in the season opener against St. Andrews. 
• Freshman Jalyn Witcher has a team-high 56 catches to go along with 851 yards and a team-high 10 touchdowns. Witcher has five 100 yard games on the year.
Matthew Rivera has totaled 51 catches for 634 yards and four scores this season. He has also added three 100+ yard performances this season.
Kiaran Turner has 437 yards receiving and four scores as Turner had 100+ yards against Fort Lauderdale week two.
• PC has had 13 different players score at least one touchdown led by Witcher with his 10 scores.
Ren Hefley's 10 touchdowns in the opener against St. Andrews were spread around to eight different pass catchers on Saturday.
