Blue Hose Kickoff League Play Against Longwood

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball team returns from its holiday break as the Blue Hose begin league play on Saturday afternoon against Longwood from the Templeton Center. The contest with the Lancers is set for a 2 p.m. tip on ESPN+.

Last Time Out
Four Blue Hose scored in double figures, but the Presbyterian College women's basketball team could not overcome a sluggish 3rd quarter as they dropped an 81-57 decision to Vanderbilt on Saturday night at Memorial Gymnasium. Junior guard Nyah Willis led the way as she recorded her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
 
Last Five Games...
Over the Blue Hose last five game, junior guard Nyah Willis is averaging 13.8 points per game to go along with 7.8 rebounds per contest. Willis has made 41.3% of her field goals during that stretch and is 21-of-24 at the foul line. Freshman A'Nyah Barker is 10-of-16 in her last five games for a team-high 62.5% field goal percentage.
 
Blue Hose in the Ranks...
As a team, the Blue Hose are ranked third in scoring defense allowing just 61.8 ppg... PC is fourth in three-point field goal percentage at 31.4%... Jade Compton begins league play fifth in the league in points per game with 15.1 ppg... Nyah Willis is eight in the league with 6.9 rebounds per contest... Compton also ranks fourth in the league in field goal percentage at 48.6%... Willis also ranks third in the league in free-throw percentage at 77.4%...
 
Big South Openers...
Saturday marks the Blue Hose 14th league opener during their tenure in the Big South. PC is looking for its sixth win in Big South openers as the Blue Hose won their league opener last season against Gardner-Webb last December. Presbyterian opened league play in 2016-17 with a 65-55 victory over Longwood the only other time they have opened league play with the Lancers.
 
Willis Double-Doubles...
Nyah Willis recorded her second double-double of the 2021-22 season on Saturday night in Nashville. Willis recorded a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds in the setback to the Commodores. She had her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds against St. Thomas in the Blue Hose home opener. She notched her first double-double last year on the road against Radford.
 
Field Goal Shooting...
As we began conference play on Saturday, PC ranks fourth in the Big South in shooting percentage at 41.2%. It is highlighted by three games of 50% or higher including a season-high 54.8% against ETSU during PC's four-game win streak earlier this season. Presbyterian has shot 41.5% or higher in seven of the 10 games during the 2021-22 season.
 
Field Goal Defense...
PC also ranks third in shooting defense among Big South teams allowing just 38.7% of opponents field goals thru 10 games. The Blue Hose have held opponents under 38.2% in the last seven games highlighted by 28.3% from the field by Clemson.
 
On Tap...
PC is scheduled to play 27 contests under the directon of fourth year head coach Alaura Sharp during the 2021-22 season including 18 league games which begin on December 29th inside the Templeton Center. The Blue Hose are slated to make trips to Kentucky, Clemson, Furman, Jacksonville and Vanderbilt in non-conference play while welcoming UNCG, ETSU and the likes of St. Thomas to Clinton. Presbyterian will play seven home-homes in league play with single matchups slated for UNC Asheville, Campbell, High Point and Winthrop.
 
Scouting the Lancers...
Longwood opened league play on Wednesday night with a 76-45 victory over N.C. A&T to improve to 4-8 overall on the year. Kyla McMakin leads the Lancers averaging 17.1 points per game throughout the 2021-22 season. Akila Smith averages 16.1 ppg along with a team-high 7.6 rebounds. Smith also leads the league with 40 blocked shots so far this season. Smith is also making 56.6% of her field goals to lead Longwood.

Up Next...
The Blue Hose hit the road for the first time in league play on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against Hampton. It is the first of two straight road games as PC travels to Greensboro to face N.C. A&T at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
