How it Happened
- Gardner-Webb got out to an early edge, tallying the first three points and seven of the first 10 on the afternoon. With GWU on top 11-5, PC ripped off a string of four in a row to close the gap to two, 11-9. The Runnin' Bulldogs countered with a 6-1 run to extend the margin out to 17-10. A late 4-0 Blue Hose run once again cut the deficit to two, 20-18, but a 4-0 Gardner-Webb answer helped to put the first set away.
- A pair of 6-0 spurts early in the second set helped Presbyterian jump out to a 13-4 advantage. Gardner-Webb got as close as 18-11, but the Blue Hose notched the next five points to put the set beyond reach and send the teams into the break even at a set apiece.
- PC edged in front 5-3 in the early stages of the third set, but GWU ran off seven of the next eight to go in front, 10-6. The 'Dogs stretched the lead out to 18-11, but the Blue Hose scored the next five in a row to jumpstart a 14-3 run to close out the set and grab a 2-1 advantage in the contest.
- Presbyterian went ahead 7-4 in the fourth set, but saw Gardner-Webb draw level at 8-8. The score remained tight much of the way, with neither team able to get more than a two-point lead for the majority of the frame. A late 4-1 surge by the Blue Hose put them back on top, 20-18. However, the 'Dogs charged back with the next five and seven of the final eight points to force a decisive fifth set.
- Gardner-Webb continued the momentum into the fifth set, reeling off the first six points of the final frame. Presbyterian got back within 7-4, but GWU responded with the next six in a row on its way to sealing the five-set victory.
