Clark Hits First Collegiate Homer as PC Drops Pair

MACON, Ga. – Rebecca Clark drove in a run in both contests, including hitting her first collegiate home run in game two, but the Presbyterian College softball team fell to Mercer 3-1 and then to Western Carolina 7-2 on Saturday at the 2021 Mercer Bears Classic.

NOTABLES
- Clark went 3-for-6 for the day, picking up at least one hit and driving in a run in both contests. The sophomore had a pair of knocks in the second game, tying her career-best, including the first home run of her collegiate career.
- Kara Starnes collected her first RBI as a collegian on a run-scoring single in the second game of the day.
- Sarah Shaw made her first collegiate start in game two and tossed her first career complete game. The righty picked up a pair of strikeouts.
- Haley Haselden went the distance in the circle for the Blue Hose in game one and struck out two.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1
- Both teams threatened in the opening inning, but were turned away, with Mercer leaving the bases loaded in its half of the first.
- The Bears notched the first run of the contest in the second.
- With two outs in the fourth, PC put together three straight singles, the last of which was an RBI single by Clark to tie the contest up at 1-1.
- Mercer answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to go back in front, 3-1.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 2
- Western Carolina broke the ice with a pair in the second, then tacked on another in the third for a 3-0 edge.
- The Catamounts pushed across three more in the fourth, pushing the margin to 6-0.
- The Blue Hose started the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back walks, but both runners were left stranded.
- Clark led off the fifth inning with a solo shot to get PC on the board.
- WCU answered right back with a run in the sixth to restore the six-run cushion.
- Starnes plated a run with a single in the bottom of the seventh, but PC's attempt at a comeback was halted after that.
 
UP NEXT
Presbyterian continues its road swing on Thursday as it heads to Greenville for a doubleheader at Furman. First pitch is set for 5 pm.
