PC Tops Winthrop; Clinches First-Round Bye

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball team never trailed and rolled past Winthrop 61-41 in the penultimate game of the regular season on Tuesday night. The victory secures a first-round bye for the Blue Hose in next week's Big South Conference Championship. Three players scored in double-figures for PC, led by Jade Compton's 15.

Scoring the Game
Maleia Bracone canned the first of her four first-half three-pointers to break an early 3-3 deadlock, giving Presbyterian a lead it did not relinquish. Bracone had six of PC's 11 points in the opening period, and the Blue Hose were up 11-7 after one.
 
Winthrop got back to within two on multiple occasions in the second quarter, but a Compton basket followed by a Tess Santos triple, on consecutive possessions, pushed the Blue Hose advantage to 25-17 at the 3:24 mark. The margin remained at eight, 29-21, heading into halftime.
 
The Blue Hose held the Eagles off of the scoreboard for the first three minutes of the third quarter, during which they went on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 16, 37-21. The advantage climbed as high as 21, 51-30, as Compton knocked down a three-pointer in the final seconds of the quarter.
 
Presbyterian eventually built the margin as high as 25, 55-30, at the 8:13 mark of the fourth quarter. A 9-0 spurt got the Eagles within 16 at 55-39, but that was as close as the hosts got for the remainder of the evening.
 
Players of the Game
Compton poured in a game-high 15 points and snared a team-high six rebounds. Bracone and Tionna Carter chipped in 12 points apiece for PC. Trinity Johnson nabbed a game-high four steals and dished out a game-high five assists for the Blue Hose. Madison Ervin, Tori Hall and Anika Riley netted seven points each to lead the Eagles, while Sydney Hunter grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
 
Stats of the Game
The Blue Hose made 19-of-53 (35.8 percent) from the floor, while Winthrop connected on 15-of-48 (31.3 percent) of its field goal attempts. PC knocked down 16-of-21 (76.2 percent) from the free throw line, while the Eagles made 7-of-9 (77.8 percent).
 
PC was plus-15 in turnover margin, as it forced a season-high 29 Winthrop miscues. As a result, the Blue Hose enjoyed a 25-6 advantage in points off of turnovers. Presbyterian also owned a 24-14 edge in points in the paint.
 
Notables
- The victory was PC's ninth Big South win of 2020-21, making it the most league wins for the program since the 2017-18 season, when it finished 9-9.
- Earning the first-round bye in next week's Big South Championship also means that the Blue Hose will reach at least the quarterfinal stage of the tournament for the ninth consecutive season.
- The 41 points allowed by Presbyterian's defense marked the fewest scored by a Big South opponent against the Blue Hose since Winthrop scored 39 on Jan. 21, 2017.
- Of Compton's game-high 15 points, 13 came in the second half on 5-of-6 shooting.
- All 12 of Bracone's points came on a career-high four three-pointers.
- Carter had a pair of blocks to overtake Santos for fifth in PC's DI era (since 2008) with 47.
- Freshman Kelsey Brown knocked down both shots she attempted to score the first five points of her collegiate career. The Simpsonville, S.C., native also grabbed a pair of steals.
