Blue Hose Edged by GWU in Quarterfinal Battle

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The fifth-seeded Presbyterian College women's basketball team nearly rallied from a double-digit fourth quarter deficit, but ultimately fell 66-62 to fourth-seeded Gardner-Webb in Big South Conference Championship Quarterfinal action from Paul Porter Arena on Monday evening. Jade Compton netted a team-high 16 points for PC, while Maleia Bracone notched her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Scoring the Game
Compton hit a pair of three-pointers in the early going to help Presbyterian jump out to a 12-2 lead. Gardner-Webb got as close as five, 17-12, in the opening stanza, but a Nyah Willis three-point play in the final seconds of the period helped the Blue Hose get the margin to 11, 23-12, after one. Compton hit all three of her three-point tries and netted 12 points in the first quarter.
 
With PC on top 27-17 near the midway point of the second quarter, GWU went on a 9-0 run, trimming the Blue Hose edge to 27-26 at halftime.
 
Presbyterian's advantage vacillated between one and three points until Gardner-Webb took its first lead of the evening with 5:43 remaining in the third quarter. The Runnin' Bulldogs overtook the Blue Hose using a 12-2 surge, and built the margin to 48-39 at the end of the third period.
 
Bracone canned a three-pointer to start the fourth quarter for the Blue Hose, drawing the visitors within six, 48-42. Gardner-Webb briefly extended the cushion into double-digits, 61-50, before PC made its charge.
 
The Blue Hose whittled the margin down to five at 61-56 on a Tess Santos three-pointer, then drew within two, 63-61, a little more than a minute later when Santos buried another triple. Tionna Carter cut the deficit to one from the foul line, but the Runnin' Bulldogs answered at the other end from the charity stripe to seal the victory and a place in Thursday's semifinals against top-seeded High Point.
 
Players of the Game
Compton led the Blue Hose with 16 points and collected nine rebounds. Bracone recorded the first double-double of her collegiate career, scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Carter (13) and Willis (10) were also in double-figures for PC. Jhessyka Williams poured in a game-high 24 points to lead Gardner-Webb.
 
Stats of the Game
Presbyterian shot 50.0 percent (23-of-46) from the field, including 6-of-14 from beyond the arc (42.9 percent). Gardner-Webb made 35.4 percent (23-of-65) from the floor, and was limited to five three-pointers on 23 attempts (21.7 percent).
 
For the 16th time in Presbyterian's 21 games this season, the Blue Hose were superior on the glass, outrebounding the Runnin' Bulldogs 38-30.
 
Notables
- Bracone tallied 13 points and 10 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double. The 10 rebounds established a new career high for the freshman. Bracone scored in double-figures in each of PC's last three games, equaling the longest streak of her freshman campaign.
- Trinity Johnson notched a pair of steals to surpass Aianna Kelly (2013-17) for third-most in the program's DI era with 143. The junior also dished out seven assists, one shy of her season high.
- The Blue Hose end the season at 11-10, making 2020-21 the first time the program has finished with a record above .500 since going 18-13 in 2015-16.
- Presbyterian posted its best road record of its DI era (since 2007), as the Blue Hose went 8-5 on their travels this season for a .625 road winning percentage.
