Baseball Splits Friday Doubleheader at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. –  Behind a seven-for-eight day at the plate by freshman Jay Wetherington, the Presbyterian College baseball team earned a split in Friday's twin bill with Winthrop at the Winthrop Ballpark. PC took game one 7-6 and the host Eagles won the finale 13-12 in 11 innings. Wetherington had three hits including two triples in game one and added four hits with two doubles and a home run in the finale.

NOTABLES
- Wetherington led the offense on Friday with seven hits in eight at bats which included two doubles, two triples, and a home run. The freshman knocked in five and swiped two bases for the Blue Hose. 
- In game one on Friday, Wetherington became the second Blue Hose in the DI era to record two triples in a game and the first since Carl Della Torre did it in 2010 against N.C. Central.
- Wetherington and Decker paced the Blue Hose in the opener with three hits apiece as Decker connected on a solo home run to open the scoring in game one. 
- Decker's first inning home run was his second on the season. 
- Noah Lebron connected on his second home run of the season as well in game one which evened the game at six in the ninth inning. 
- Alex Flood matched his career-high with six strikeouts in the Blue Hose 7-6 victory.
- In his first game action since April 20, freshman Chris Veach pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his fourth save of the season.
- In game two, Wetherington was a perfect four-for-four to lead the Blue Hose offensively as he connected on his first collegiate home run. 
- Sean Klein added three hits in game two for the Blue Hose which included his first triple of the season. 
- Joining Wetherington in game two on the home run parade were Zacchaeus Rasberry and Landon Shaw. Rasberry connected on his eighth home run of the season and Shaw his third of the year. 
- Eric Toth matched his career-high with five strikeouts in relief during game two. 
- With PC's five home runs on Friday, the Blue Hose moved into fourth as a team in the single-season team record book for home runs with 42 long balls this season. 
- With his game one victory, Eric Miles tied Michael Burns for second in the modern era record book with his 24th career victory. 
- PC had a season-high 17 hits in game two.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE
- Decker got the Blue Hose started in the first with a solo home run to lead off the game.
- Winthrop answered in the first with a two-run single to take a 2-1 lead.
- In the second, Wetherington connected on an RBI triple to tie it up at two. PC wasn't done as back-to-back RBI singles from Decker and Fahr gave PC the 4-2 lead after an inning and a half.
- Winthrop added single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to take a 5-4 advantage after five on the Blue Hose. 
- The hosts added a solo home run in the eighth to extend the lead to 6-4.
- PC for the second straight game rallied in the ninth starting with a two-run game-tying home run from Lebron.
- After Wetherington's second triple of the game, Decker lined a single to centerfield and break the tie and give PC a lead they would not relinquish as Chris Veach came in and shut the door for the Blue Hose in the bottom of the ninth. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO
- Winthrop got on the board first in the second to take an early 1-0 lead. 
- PC quickly responded in the third as Rasberry started the scoring with a two-run home run to jump out in front 2-1. 
- Wetherington continued his strong day at the plate with a two-run double to extend the lead to 4-1. 
- Jake Wyandt and Kyle Decker capped the six-run frame with RBI singles as the Blue Hose jumped out in front of the Eagles 6-1. 
- Winthrop scored four times in the fourth to cut the Eagles deficit to 6-5 after four innings. 
- Wetherington quickly responded for PC in the fifth with a solo home run to give PC a 7-5 lead.
- The Eagles answered with a solo shot in the fifth to push it back to a one-run game at 7-6.
- Winthrop evened it at seven in the sixth with an RBI single. 
- In the seventh, PC plated three runs which started with a Wetherington RBI single and was capped by Shaw's two-run homer.
- Winthrop responded in the home half of the inning with two runs to cut the deficit to one, 10-9. 
- The hosts tied it in the ninth to force extras.
- Both teams traded two-run frames in the tenth to make it 12-12 before an 11th inning sacrifice fly by the Eagles gave them a 13-12 victory. 
 
UP NEXT
- The Blue Hose now will prepare for the Ingles Big South Baseball Championship that begins next Thursday, May 25 in Fayetteville. The Blue Hose enter as the No. 4 seed and will face top seed Campbell at 3 p.m. on Thursday from Segra Stadium.
