Volleyball Closes Out First Half of League Slate with Pair of Matchups

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College volleyball team rounds out the first half of conference play with a trip to Winthrop on Thursday night to battle the Eagles at 6 p.m. on ESPN+. The first half of the league schedule wraps up on Saturday for the Blue Hose when CSU travels to Clinton for a 2 p.m. first serve.

Last Time Out...
The Presbyterian College volleyball team outlasted Gardner-Webb on Saturday night in a five-set thriller as the Blue Hose took down the Runnin' Bulldogs (16-25, 27-25, 25-19,22-25,15-12) inside the Templeton Center. PC was led by senior Paige Cairns who tallied a career-high 19 kills on 33 swings with a .545 hitting percentage. The Blue Hose also had 17 kills from Kasey Battle and 12 kills, 11 digs from Rylee Moorhead in the win.

Battle Named Big South Player of the Week…
Following her career-high 17 kills in a five-set win over Gardner-Webb, junior Kasey Battle has been named the Big South Volleyball Player of the Week for matches played October 3rd-9th. She began her weekend on Friday with eight kills on 17 swings as she hit .353 in the Blue Hose four-set win over the Bulldogs. She also filled the stat sheet with four blocks and three digs in the victory. Battle stepped it up in a big way on Saturday against Gardner-Webb as she tallied a career-high 17 kills to go along with four more blocks as PC outlasted the Runnin' Bulldogs on Saturday. The Blue Hose had three players tally 10+ kills on Saturday along with Battle, Paige Cairns had 19 kills and Rylee Moorhead had 12 marking the third time the Blue Hose have had at least three players record 10+ kills in a match.

Head to Head...
Winthrop holds a 28-9 lead over the Blue Hose in the all-time DI series as the Eagles swept the three matchups including in the Big South Championship last November. The Blue Hose will look for their first win against the Eagles since November 2018 when PC took its home finale from the Eagles in five sets... PC holds a 19-13 advantage over Charleston Southern with the Bucs taking the most recent match in three sets. The Blue Hose took a 3-1 win over CSU in Clinton last October.

Scouting the Eagles..
Winthrop enters the match with an 8-9 record which includes a 4-2 mark in Big South matches this season. The Eagles earned a pair of straight set wins last weekend against Gardner-Webb and USC Upstate in Rock Hill. Winthrop's offense is led by Alayna Jansky who's totaled 209 kills throughout the Eagles 17 matches. Isabella Murray leads the team with 643 assists. On the defensive end, Madison Gorniak is one of five Eagles with 100+ digs as she's tallied 218 on the year. Alicia Roberts leads Winthrop with 65 blocks throughout the 2022 season.

Scouting the Bucs...
Charleston Southern begins the week with a 10-10 mark as the Bucs are set to battle Winthrop on Friday before visiting Clinton on Saturday afternoon. CSU was victorious in five set against UNC Asheville last time out in Charleston. CSU is led offensively by Peyton Thompson who's tallied 304 kills and 28 service aces in the 2022 season. Skylar Yates has totaled 221 kills and a team-high 33 service aces. Emilee Karelse leads the Bucs with 570 helpers on the season. Angelika Rusin leads the Bucs defensively with 388 digs while Yates has totaled 207. Indigo Young has 50 blocks for CSU.

Hewitt Moving Up Record Book...
Junior Anna Hewitt continues to climb towards 1,000 career digs as the Blue Hose libero has totaled 186 digs for PC thus far in 2022. Hewitt has totaled 950 digs in her Blue Hose career which puts her eighth in the record book just two digs out of seventh place. The Alvaton, Ky. native is looking to become the sixth player in the PC DI era to reach the 1,000 dig plateau.

Blue Hose in the Ranks...
Rylee Moorhead ranks third in the Big South with 26 service aces, while Anna Hewitt is tied for fifth with 20 and Abby Sparkman ranks eighth with 17... Moorhead sits eighth in the league with 170 kills... Kinsey Bailey sits fifith in the conference with 371 assists as she's averaging 5.98/set...
