Presbyterian Blanks Winthrop, 2-0, to Clinch a Spot in the Big South Tournament

CLINTON, S.C. – Behind a strong defensive performance and goals by Nile Nguidjol and Nacho Gallego, the Presbyterian Blue Hose (10-4-2, Big South: 3-3-2) defeated the Winthrop Eagles (3-13-1, Big South: 2-5-1), 2-0, at Martin Stadium in their final regular season game. With the win, Presbyterian clinched a berth in the four-team Big South Conference Tournament.

"I am so excited for our team," Presbyterian coach Jonathan Potter said. "Our team has earned this moment. I thought we played really well tonight. Hopefully, we can carry that momentum into the conference tournament. Overall in the regular season to achieve 10 wins is a remarkable feat for any college program. To clinch a spot in the Conference Tournament on the final day of the regular season was a special moment for our program."
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the 7th minute, Presbyterian's Gerard Lopez found Nguidjol streaking down the left side of the box. Nguidjol blasted a ball into the back of the net from about 10 yards out for the game's first goal.
In the 24th minute, Presbyterian's Niklas Hoener found Gallego about 10 yards from the top of the box. Gallego beat a Winthrop defender and then sent a shot into the lower left corner of the goal past Winthrop's goalkeeper Sam Jones for the game's second goal."
 
NOTABLES
  • Presbyterian's defense recorded their eighth shutout of the season. Goalkeeper Leo Stritter made six saves in the game.
  • Nguidjol's goal was his third of the season. Gallego scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
  • The Blue Hose finished the game with a 15-11 advantage in shots. Lopez and Lorenzo Nagy led the Blue Hose with three shots apiece. Nguidjol and Gallego each recorded two shots. Hoener, Carson Griffith, Jamari Busby, and Uriel Ferguson each added a shot to Presbyterian's offensive attack.
  • With the win, Presbyterian recorded 10 wins for the first time in the program's Division I era.
 
UP NEXT
With tonight's win, Presbyterian earned the fourth seed in the Big South Conference Tournament. The Blue Hose will play the Big South regular-season champion Campbell Camels on the road in the semifinals of the tournament this Sunday, November 6 at 6 p.m.
