Women's Basketball Set to Open Big South Championship on Tuesday

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball team is set to open the 2022 Hercules Tires Big South Women's Basketball Championship on Tuesday as the Blue Hose face #9 seed Winthrop at noon from Bojangles Coliseum. The game will be shown on ESPN+ and is the opening game of the 2022 Big South tournament.

Matchup: #9 Winthrop (6-23, 4-14 Big South) vs. #8 Presbyterian (11-17, 6-12 Big South)

Fifth-year senior Jade Compton recorded her third double-double of the season with 18 points to go along with 11 rebounds as the Presbyterian College women's basketball team fell on Tuesday night by the score of 58-42 to Winthrop from Winthrop Coliseum.
 
Big South Tournament History...
The Blue Hose are 6-8 all-time in the Big South tournament as they enter their 10th tournament on Tuesday afternoon. PC has recorded wins against Charleston Southern, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Winthrop and most recently Longwood during the 2020 tournament.
 
Last Five Games...
Over the Blue Hose last five regular season games they had four players score in double figures led by Maleia Bracone and Jade Compton as the duo each averaged 15.8 ppg... Tionna Carter added 13.8 per contest and Nyah Willis rounded out the group averaging 11.0 ppg... Carter led the way on glass with 6.8 per game... Nyah Willis had 5.4 per and Compton and Bracone each added five... Bracone led the team with 16 assists and 11 steals... Carter closed the regular season shooting 59.6% from the field (28-of-47)... PC went 78.6% at the line down the stretch including 8-of-8 from Compton, 11-of-13 for Bracone and 30-of-36 for Willis...
 
Blue Hose in the Ranks...
Jade Compton finished the regular season fifth in the league in scoring with 15.8 ppg... Compton was also tied for seventh in rebounding with 6.9 per game... She finished the regular season seventh in field goal percentage at 47.0%... Nyah Willis at 76.2% from the free throw line finished fourth in the conference as Tionna Carter ranked sixth with a 70.1%... Maleia Bracone finished seventh in three pointers with 50 made on the year... Bracone finished 10th in assists with 73... As a team, the Blue Hose shot 72.6% at the line to rank second in the Big South... PC ranks third in rebounding in the Big South with 36.1 per game... The Blue Hose wrapped up the year as one of just three teams to have a positive rebounding margin at +1.9...
 
Blue Hose in the Ranks in League Play...
Compton finished fifth in league games in rebounding with 7.6 per contest... She also finished eighth in scoring at 16.2 per game... Nyah Willis finished fifth in conference games at the foul line making 75.3%... Maleia Bracone made 34 threes in Big South contests to rank seventh...
 
Double-Doubles in 2021-22...
Tionna Carter picked up her second double-double of the season on Wednesday against USC Upstate with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Carter recorded her first of the year with 11 points and 10 boards against High Point last month. Jade Compton leads the team with four double-doubles as her most recent came against Charleston Southern as it was her second straight with 26 points and 15 rebounds against the Bucs. She had 18 points and 11 rebounds against Winthrop in the game prior to the CSU game as well. She had a pair of double-doubles in the beginning of league play already this season against Charleston Southern (12 pts, 10 rebs) and Longwood (32 pts, 15 rebs). Nyah Willis had a pair of double-doubles in non-conference play against St. Thomas (15 pts, 11 rebs) and Vanderbilt (16 pts, 12 rebs)...Maleia Bracone picked up her second career double-double against Campbell with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Scouting Winthrop...
Winthrop enters the tournament as the No. 9 seed with a 6-23 record inclduing 4-14 in league play after dropping its last three league games. The Eagles are led by J'Mani Ingram who averaged 10.7 ppg and 5.4 rebounds/game. Myra Strickland led the Eagles with 33 threes as she scored 9.5 ppg. Sierra Hunter led the Eagles on the glass averaging 6.2 per game.

The winner of Tuesday's first round game will advance to Thursday's quarterfinal to face top seeded Campbell at noon from Bojangles Coliseum.
