Blue Hose Take Two from Pirates to Begin Series

CLINTON, S.C.-  The Presbyterian College softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of the Hampton Pirates on Saturday, winning game one 3-2 and taking game two by run-rule, 9-0 in five innings. PC is now 18-5 (4-1 Big South) while Hampton moves to 10-17 (1-4 Big South).

Game 1

Jenna Greene began the doubleheader with a 1-2-3 inning, but PC also went down in order in the bottom half. Hampton scored the first runs of the day in the 2nd with an RBI single and an error which allowed a second run to score. Presbyterian responded as Jillian Hewes shot a leadoff homerun over the left field wall in the bottom of the 2nd, but that's all that was able to be done at that point. Greene left two runners on in the 3rd and went through the order in the 4th to allow her team a chance to tie it. That's exactly what they did as Lath Freeman and Hewes singled to begin the home half. Kara Starnes came in to run for Freeman and crossed the plate after Rebecca Clark punched one through the middle to tie the game. The Blue Hose would take the lead in the following inning as Kelby Goodrum got aboard with a single. She was sent to third by a Kaitlyn Tucker single, and then Freeman forced one through the left side scoring the go-ahead run in Goodrum. Greene would strikeout four of her final six batters as Presbyterian held on to win game one.

Game 2

Presbyterian started game two by putting up two runs in the first inning. Johnson started the inning reaching on an error, then Freeman brought her home with a double. Clark sent one to left to load the bases, and Freeman scored on a wild pitch with Jaiden Tweed at the plate. Hess retired the Pirates in order in the 2nd and then the Blue Hose exploded for seven. Presbyterian was able to bat around as a slew of singles and doubles kept growing the lead, with everyone coming to the plate credited with an at-bat able to get on base at least once. With the lead now at 9-0 it was up to Hess and the defense to hold it and secure a comfortable victory. Hess would surrender a single in the 3rd, but no damage was done. PC looked to add more in the 3rd as they had the bases loaded, but a line drive straight to the third baseman saw a double play be made. A single in the 4th would give Hampton another base runner, but Hess easily got out of that inning as well. The freshman pitcher would punch-out two of her last three batters to give her team the doubleheader sweep.
