CLINTON, S.C.- The Presbyterian College softball team was down 8-4 midway through game three of the series, but the Blue Hose were able to score two in the 4
th and three in the 6
th to mount a comeback and come away with the series sweep over Hampton. This is the first three-game series sweep over a conference opponent for Presbyterian since they swept Winthrop in 2012.
The win takes Presbyterian to a 19-5 record and 5-1 in the Big South, while Hampton falls to 10-18 and 1-5 in conference play.
Game Breakdown
Morgan Hess was given the start for game three as she sat the Pirates down in order to begin the game, and worked out of a runner in scoring position in the 2
nd. In the bottom of the 2
nd,
Jillian Hewes led things off with a solo homerun on the first pitch she saw. Hess helped her own cause by going back-to-back as her shot bounced off the top of the wall and went over.
Jaiden Tweed doubled with one out and
Kelby Goodrum brought her home with a single for a 3-0 lead after two. Hampton got a pair back to begin the 3
rd as a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch allowed two to cross the plate. PC answered by getting a run back in the bottom half as
Kaitlyn Tucker singles and
Lath Freeman doubled. Hewes walked and Hess used a sacrifice fly to score Tucker.
Things got interesting in the 4
th for PC as the Pirates were able to put up a six spot. Hess was eventually pulled for
Jenna Greene as Hampton used a handful of singles and a double to take the lead. All of the runs came unearned due to an early error that would've ended the inning prior to the runs being scored. The Blue Hose were able to get two of those runs back as
Bailey Watkins stroked a two-run homer out to left field, her first homerun of her career to make it 8-6.
Haley Haselden came out of the bullpen to pitch in the 5
th as she was able to work through after a double. In the 6
th she gave up a single but once again was able to go back to the dugout unharmed. In the bottom of the inning PC was able to tie the game on a Freeman single that scored Johnson and Tucker. The Blue Hose were able to take the lead on an error which would ultimately be the game-winning run. Haselden struck out the side in the 7
th as Presbyterian completed the sweep.
