BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Presbyterian College softball team took one of two on Saturday afternoon against the Camels, winning game one 4-0, but Campbell flipped the script in game two taking it by the same score. PC is now 20-6 (6-2, Big South) while Campbell moves to 15-11 (4-4, Big South).
Game 1
Presbyterian led off the game hitting first for just the second time this season and they were able to make it count with some small ball.
Layna Johnson had a leadoff single and was moved to second with a sac bunt from
Kaitlyn Tucker.
Lath Freeman had an infield single, and
Jillian Hewes punched one through to send Johnson across the plate for the game's opening run.
Jenna Greene tossed game one and sat down the Camels in order in the 1
st. She got out of the 2
nd after a runner reached scoring position and came out of the 3
rd unscaved after runners were on first and second.
Morgan Hess doubled in the 4
th and eventually reached third, but she was left stranded as PC was unable to add another run at that point. The Blue Hose were able to increase their lead in the 5
th as
Bailey Watkins got aboard on a one-out single. Johnson stepped up next and with two strikes blasted one opposite field and over the wall to give PC a 3-0 lead. Campbell threatened with runners on first and second once again in the bottom half, but Greene was able to work her way out of it, retaining her shutout. After a scoreless 6
th, the Blue Hose were able to tack on an insurance run by the hands of Johnson who scorched a double into the gap scoring
Kelby Goodrum. The four runs would be enough as Greene went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 7
th to secure the 4-0 win and her sixth shutout of the season.
Game 2
Game two wasn't as kindly of a start as game one as Campbell opened the scoring this time in the 1
st. A single and a stolen base saw a runner get to second and a following single scored the first run of game two. Hess got out of a jam in the 2
nd inning as the bases were loaded with one out, but the freshman did her job getting the next two outs without allowing a run. The teams traded 1-2-3's in the 3
rd and PC went down in order in the 4
th. Campbell added to their lead in the bottom half as an error extended the inning, allowing a triple and a single to score two for a 3-0 advantage to the hosts.
Haley Haselden came on in the 5
th and did her job, but the Blue Hose were still hitless through six. Campbell made it 4-0 after another triple and a wild pitch with two outs. Presbyterian finally got their first hit to leadoff the 7
th as Tucker found a hole up the middle. Freeman walked after that as PC looked to make a comeback in the final inning. However, Campbell would make a couple defensive plays and the final outs were recorded as they knotted the series one apiece.
