Presbyterian Sweeps Gardner-Webb in a Doubleheader

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian Blue Hose softball team (24-8, BSC: 10-4) swept the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs (13-18, BSC: 5-9) in a doubleheader at the PC Softball Complex. Behind nine hits including a three-run home run by Morgan Hess and a strong pitching performance from Jenna Greene, the Blue Hose shutout Gardner-Webb, 5-0, in game one. In game two behind ten hits including two-run scoring hits by Lath Freeman, Jillian Hewes, and Rebecca Clark, Presbyterian topped Gardner-Webb, 6-4.

"I am really happy obviously anytime we can get two wins helps us in the conference standings," Presbyterian coach David Williams. "We got hits when we needed them today. We had players respond in pressure situations with big hits. We got the job done today."

GAME ONE
In the second inning, the Blue Hose scored the game's first run when Hewes, who reached base on a double to left field, scored on a Kelby Goodrum single to center field. In the third inning, the Blue Hose tacked on three more runs when Hess connected on a three-run blast over the center field wall. Presbyterian scored the game's final run in the fifth inning when Kennedy Rhue scored on Jaiden Tweed's double to center field.

The other major story of the game was Greene's pitching. She threw a complete game shutout scattering one hit while recording 10 strikeouts.

GAME TWO
In the first inning, Presbyterian scored two runs on four hits. The big hit of the inning was Tweed's two-run double down the left field line. Gardner-Webb cut Presbyterian's lead in half with a run in the top of the fourth inning. The big play of the inning was a double play which began with Tweed catching a fly ball in center field and then making a fantastic throw to Freeman to throw out a Gardner-Webb runner at the plate attempting to score the game-tying run. In the bottom of the fourth, Presbyterian added two more runs on Clark's two-run blast over the center field wall. The Blue Hose scored their final two runs on a two-run single by Freeman in the bottom of the sixth inning. Gardner-Webb brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning after scoring three runs but Hess, who recorded the win pitching in relief, was able to get a Gardner-Webb hitter to ground out to end the game.
