MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Limiting the other side to a goal output of zero for the second match in a row, the Presbyterian College women's soccer team finished up Sunday afternoon's road trip to Alabama State with their second scoreless result in as many outings.
Despite a shot total of 23 not amounting to any scores in their favor, the Blue Hose can hang their hats on an increasingly-stubborn defensive unit that has now gone 203 consecutive minutes without surrendering a single goal.
FINAL SCORE: Presbyterian 0 – Alabama State 0
RECORDS: Presbyterian (0-2-2), Alabama State (0-2-1)
LOCATION: ASU Soccer Complex
HOW IT HAPPENED:
While the direct final score mimics that of Presbyterian's previous go-around with ETSU at Martin Stadium, head coach
Brian Purcell's unit enjoyed a steadier offensive approach on Sunday in comparison to last week's stalemate with the Buccaneers. Producing 23 looks at the net – 15 of which coming from the true freshman trio of
Sloan Spees,
Alynne Paim, and
Lindsey Malyszek – PC constantly positioned themselves for what could have been the game-deciding strike. Nonetheless, the scoreboard in Montgomery never flinched largely due to ASU keeper Sheila Sanchez' eight saves for the day.
Presbyterian goalie
Kelly Hall was equally up for the task on the opposite side of the field with five stoppages of her own (giving her 11 for the semester) as the rest of the PC back line prevented the Hornets from gathering even a single corner kick opportunity with 10 shots overall.
Lining up their most shot tries in a single match since October of 2019 in a road setting at UNC Asheville, the Blue Hose remained ultra-aggressive when possessing the ball on Sunday, with Spees in particular hauling in a season-best seven individual shots, one off the third-most in a single match by one player since the school jumped to the D-I ranks in 2007.
Equaling last year's total already with two defensive shutouts before the season has turned two weeks old, Presbyterian worked into another sublime effort from their back line while letting the offense keep the pressure on ASU. While it wouldn't amount to any changes in the final box score, the season-high shot totals for Spees, Malyszek, and Paim (the latter two each having four) continue to show improvement for a PC squad preparing for their next three dates at their own backyard.
UP NEXT:
In the midst of a sequence with five out of six matches with homefield advantage on their side, coach Purcell's club heads back to Clinton on the first day of the month where they'll face off with Kennesaw State for the second time in the past three years. First touch inside Martin Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
The Owls have begun the 2022 slate at 0-3 awaiting Sunday evening's affair with Georgia State at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. The Blue Hose will be searching for a different result than the programs' only other bout back in 2019, a 3-1 victory for KSU in South Carolina.
