Balanced Attack Leads Blue Hose to Pair of Wins in Spartanburg

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Presbyterian College volleyball team used an all-around team performance on Friday morning in a five-set victory over Georgia State (27-25, 27-29, 25-13, 20-25, 16-14) at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. PC took a straight-set match (25-21, 25-12, 25-12) over S.C. State in its second contest of the day.

"I am proud of our team today to earn a pair of wins. It was a team effort across the board against Georgia State to get a hard-fought five-set win. We had a chance to work some different lineups in the second match against S.C. State and proud of the performance from the players who took advantage of their opportunities."

How it Happened vs Georgia State
- The Blue Hose raced out of the gates on Friday with a 5-0 burst to force an early timeout from the Panthers. Georgia State was able to even the set at 14 apiece using a 5-1 spurt to even the set. PC used a 5-1 run to get back to a 19-15 advantage before the Panthers answered cutting the margin to one, 20-19. Both teams traded points with five ties down the stretch before three late PC points led to a 27-25 set win.
- Both teams traded early runs before a 4-0 run from the Panthers pushed them out to a 10-7 advantage in the second set. The Panthers were able to push the lead to five, 14-9 before a 6-1 PC run allowed Presbyterian to tie the set at 15 apiece. GSU pushed in front at 18-16 before the Blue Hose rattled off five of the next six points to take a 21-19 lead. Georgia State pushed back in front by the score of 24-23 but back-to-back kills from Rylee Moorhead gave PC the 25-24 edge late. The two teams once again traded bursts before the Panthers edged them out with a 29-27 set two victory.
- The Blue Hose seized early control of set three with a 7-3 advantage over Georgia State. GSU cut the margin to three at 9-6 before the Blue Hose rattled off six straight points to push to a 15-6 lead. GSU scored four of the next five points before PC closed set three on a 9-3 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
- Similar to set three, PC jumped out to the early 8-4 advantage in the fourth set over the Panthers. PC got the lead to 11-7 before GSU scored six straight points to take a 13-11 lead in the set. PC cut the deficit to one on multiple occasions before an 8-4 burst from the Panthers gave them a 25-20 set four win setting up the decisive fifth set.
- GSU got the early edge in set five with a 4-2 lead before PC was able to even the set at six apiece as both teams had mini-bursts in the decisive set. As the set tied at eight, GSU took control with three straight points to take an 11-8 advantage. PC went on the attack with six straight points and took a 14-11 lead. GSU wouldn't go down quietly with three unanswered before back-to-back points from a Hailey Grocholski kill and Moorhead block propelled PC to the 16-14 win.

Notables vs Georgia State
Kinsey Bailey tallied her second double-double of the season in the match against the Panthers totaling 39 assists and 18 digs. Bailey also tallied a career-high six kills.
- Moorhead totaled her second double-double of the season with 13 kills and 15 digs in the contest. She also matched her career-high with four blocks as all four blocks were solos.
- Grocholski recorded a career-high 13 kills while adding a career-high four aces.
- As a team, PC tallied a season-high 60 kills in the contest led by Moorhead and Grocholski with 13 apiece.
- Freshman Elyse Hutchinson totaled a career-high 12 kills in the victory. She added two assists, five digs, and a pair of blocks in the contest.
- Friday's win was the Blue Hose first five-set match of the 2022 season.

How it Happened vs S.C. State
- S.C. State jumped out quickly in set one to the early 6-3 edge as the Bulldogs used a 5-0 spurt to get the lead. The Blue Hose and Bulldogs traded bursts with four ties over the next several points leading to a 15-15 match midway thru the set. The Bulldogs used a 4-2 burst to get a 19-17 lead and force a Blue Hose timeout. PC answered out of the timeout with four straight points to force an SCSU timeout. The Blue Hose closed the set scoring four of the final six points to take the set 25-21.
- PC came out quick in set two with the first five points to get an early 5-0 lead over the Bulldogs. The Blue Hose continued to keep the pressure on SCSU in the set as they pushed the lead to seven, 10-3 forcing a Bulldog timeout. SCSU was able to get it to seven, 14-7 before a 6-2 run pushed the Blue Hose to a commanding 25-12 set win.
- The Blue Hose opened the third set red hot with a 12-3 run to begin the set and force SCSU to spend a timeout. The Bulldogs cut the lead to eight in the set at 15-7 before PC closed on a 10-5 run to win the match in straight sets. 

Notables vs S.C. State
- Freshman Sophia Del Valle tallied a career-high 18 digs on the defensive end for PC as she also totaled four assists and a pair of aces.
- Moorhead was one of three players with a team-high eight kills joined by Hutchinson and Cairns in the victory. Moorhead also tied her career-high with five service aces over the Bulldogs.
- Hutchinson totaled her eight kills on 12 swings hitting an eye-popping .667 in the win. She added four digs on the defensive side of the court.
- Freshman Aliza Hart totaled 10 assists for her first career 10+ assist performance of her Blue Hose career.
- PC improved to 4-0 on the season when totaling 10+ aces as the Blue Hose had 11 in the three-set win over the Bulldogs. PC tallied 10 in the match earlier on Friday against GSU.
- As a team, the Blue Hose tallied a season-high .313 hitting percentage in the contest over the Bulldogs

- The Blue Hose wrap up the weekend on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a battle against host Wofford in the Terrier Invite. The match will be shown on ESPN+ on Saturday and serve as the final non-conference match for PC.
