Volleyball Travels to Boone for Mountaineer Classic

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College volleyball team continues its season-opening road swing this weekend with a trip up the mountain to battle in the Mountaineer Classic hosted by Appalachian State. The Blue Hose open the weekend on Friday battling Furman at 10 a.m. before facing Texas A&M-Commerce at 4 p.m…. The weekend wraps up with a 12:30 p.m. matchup on Saturday against the host Mountaineers on ESPN+.

Last Time Out...
The Presbyterian College volleyball team led by sophomore Rylee Moorhead picked up a 3-1 (25-20, 20-25,25-22,25-23) victory over Jacksonville in the final match of the Jacksonville Invitational inside Swisher Gym on Saturday afternoon. Moorhead totaled her first double-double of the season with a team-high 16 kills along with 14 digs and a pair of aces in the victory.
 
Head to Head...
Furman has taken each of the 10 prior meetings from the Blue Hose in the DI era with the most recent coming last season in Greenville when the Paladins won 3-1... PC and DI newcomer Texas A&M-Commerce will meet for the first time in the program's respective history on Friday... App State is 3-0 head-to-head against PC with this marking the first meeting between the Blue Hose and Mountaineers since 2014...
 
Scouting the Paladins..
Furman enters the weekend with a 1-4 mark after dropping a pair of matches last time out against Kennesaw State and High Point. Lauren Haynes leads the Furman attack with 42 kills as she's also added seven aces and eight blocks. Sarah Turner has 83 assists to lead Furman as Ella Abraham has totaled 71 helpers on the season. Genevieve Perry has totaled a team-high 15 blocks. Furman recorded it's lone win on the season with a four-set victory over Norfolk State in the season opening Pirate Invitational.
 
Scouting the Lions...
Texas A&M-Commerce earned the program's first DI win on Tuesday over Prairie View A&M to improve to 1-6 on the year. Reese Fetty leads the Lions with 70 kills and nine service aces so far in 2022. Celeste Vela has totaled a team-high 194 assists thru the team's first seven matches. Lyric Hebert leads A&M-Commerce on the defensive end with 95 digs. The Lions have totaled 50 blocks on the season led by Taryn Cast with 25 and Carley Spachman with 22.
 
Scouting the Mountaineers...
Appalachian State enters the weekend with a 3-3 mark after the Mountaineers earned wins over USC Upstate and Wofford in Spartanburg over the weekend. McCall Denny is one of three App State players with 50+ kills on the season as she's totaled 67. Maya Winterhoff and Madison Baldridge each have 59 to their stat line on the young season. Sophie Cain leads the way with 148 assists with Sam Bickley recording 93 helpers. Winterhoff has also totaled a team-high 23 blocks.
 
Baranski Goes Back-to-Back...
For the second time in as many weeks, freshman Anna Baranski has been named the Big South Volleyball Freshman of the week for matches played August 29th-September 4th. Coming off of last week's honor, Baranski carried that momentum into Jacksonville as she filled the stat sheet with 24 kills (2.0/set), 72 assists (6.0/set), 48 digs (4.0/set) and added two double-doubles and a triple-double in the Jacksonville Invitational.
 
Blue Hose in the Ranks...
Freshman Anna Baranski ranks fifth in the league with 116 assists... Abby Sparkman checks in second in the league with 12 service aces and Anna Hewitt and Rylee Moorhead are tied for third with 11 aces... Hewitt ranks sixth in the league with 79 digs and Baranski is eighth with 65 digs... As a team, the Blue Hose lead the league with 47 aces...
