Blue Hose Open Spring Season with Victory Over Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C... – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team opened the spring slate on Saturday afternoon earning a 5-2 victory at Joe Cabri Tennis Center over Lander.

 "Good victory over a quality opponent. We came out in doubles a little tight but really happy with how the team responded in singles. We are looking forward to a good match tomorrow against Clemson." 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Varvara Nikolaeva and McKenzie Davis got it going quickly in doubles with a 6-1 victory in the No. 3 spot before the Bearcats answered with a 6-1 and 6-4 win at the top two spots to earn the first point of Saturday's match.
- Madison Dennett got the Blue Hose on the board quickly in singles with a straight-set victory at the No. 5 spot for PC before Davis pushed the lead to 2-1 with a 6-3, 6-3 win.
- Claudia Sanchez, at the top spot for PC on Saturday, made it 3-1 with her straight-set decision.
- Lander got on the board at the No. 6 spot in singles before Valentina De Sousa earned the deciding point for the Blue Hose on Saturday with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 result at No. 4.
- Lucianna Piedra earned a three-set decision at the No. 2 spot to give PC the 5-2 win over Lander. 
 
NOTABLES
- Nikolaeva made her Blue Hose debut on Saturday with a victory at No. 3 doubles, highlighting her collegiate debut.
- PC tallied its second straight victory over the Bearcats after the 7-0 victory a season ago.
- The Blue Hose top three of Sanchez, Piedra, and Davis each tallied their second singles wins of the dual season after each got wins in the fall dual against Newberry. 
 
UP NEXT
- The Blue Hose have a quick turnaround, with a trip to Clemson on tap for PC. The match with the Tigers is set for an 11 a.m. start on Sunday.
