PC Ends Brown Match on 19-0 Run; Splits Tri-Dual at Franklin & Marshall

LANCASTER, Pa. – Swiftly turning a nine-point deficit into a 10-point victory to bring in the new year with their third head-to-head W of the 2022-23 season, the Presbyterian College men's wrestling team finished off their second straight tri-dual with a 1-1 trek in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on Thursday afternoon, downing Brown 25-15 before falling to hosting Franklin & Marshall in the second half of the two-parter, 33-9.

On the brink of the 10th annual David H. Lehman F&M Open starting tomorrow morning, the Blue Hose continued their lengthy stretch of dual competition with their sixth and seventh consecutive one-on-one meetings in the Keystone State. Redshirt-junior Trenton Donahue and true freshman Tyler Chittum scored a pair of W's over both the Bears and the Diplomats in the split result, allowing PC to find their second straight match with an unanswered double-digit scoring run in the come-from-behind switch that toppled Brown.

A 12-0 rally in the team's previous bout with Duke in Clinton very nearly gave Presbyterian the momentum needed to post a major win pre-Christmas, although the Blue Devils squeezed out the decision in the 10th and final match to avoid a blown lead. On this occasion, an even larger scoring spree sealed the deal for PC by securing 19 straight points against Brown on five wins in a row, going from only six team points at the halfway mark to a comfortable victory in the blink of an eye.

Donahue's pinfall triumph in match #3 gave the Pennsylvania native his seventh W of the year (with his eighth to come only an hour later against F&M). Faced with a 15-6 deficit with 50% of the meet already gone, Presbyterian never wavered and thwarted any attempts at a Brown extension by going on the aforementioned five-match streak. Chittum (165) was the culprit of the run's opening thanks to an overtime fall that trimmed the hole to five, before an MD from 174-pounder Zach Wells and a decision victory by second-year David Bertrand suddenly put the Blue Hose ahead for good.

Not content with the 16-15 edge, director Mark Cody's club kept their foot on the gas pedal by finding the fifth W of the season from redshirt-junior Cordel Duhart, another decision result that stretched the lead to six. Recent SoCon Wrestler of the Week recipient Malcolm Wiley – inserted into the heavyweight battle instead of his usual 197-lb. distinction – polished off the momentous win in the Bears' last gasp (the 12th time that the sophomore has had his hand raised since the campaign's start back in November).

Only Donahue and Chittum could keep up PC's pace from their adrenaline-fueled ending to the Brown triumph, winning by decision and pin respectively during the Franklin & Marshall nightcap. A 17-3 advantage obtained by the Diplomats was too large a sum for the Blue Hose to overcome, moving the squad's overall duals record to 3-5.

UP NEXT
There won't be much time for rest after the triple threat up north, as the F&M Open at the same site kicks off on Friday at 9:00 a.m. Tomorrow will declare the Blue Hose's first time included in this specific tourney since the program's inaugural stint in 2019, one of 29 schools in 10 separate brackets that consists of over 500 wrestlers.

The Army Black Knights handily captured the overall team prize in last season's edition of the tournament, clinging to 165 total points. Air Force, Virginia, Navy Prep, and Lock Haven backed up the rest of the event's top five, as the tournament continues to showcase its growth in popularity with each passing winter.
