Baseball Tames Wildcats for First Big 10 Win in Eight Years

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team continued its winning ways on Saturday as the Blue Hose earned a 4-2 win over Northwestern at the PC Baseball Complex. Fenix DiGiacomo struck out seven in six innings to earn his second win, as Luke Gibson tallied four strikeouts in the final three innings for the save. On the offensive side, PC was led by Jay Wetherington, who added three hits in the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- PC struck first on Saturday in the fourth, with Chase Hughes lining an RBI single through the left side to score Dalton Reeves and get Presbyterian the 1-0 lead. 
- Trey Fenderson kept the line moving with another RBI single in the fourth before Jay Wetherington capped the frame with a single back up the middle. 
- Northwestern answered in the fifth with back-to-back RBI doubles to quickly cut the PC lead to 3-2 after 4.5 innings. 
- Presbyterian added an insurance run in the seventh when Jack Gorman had an RBI single of his own to give PC the 4-2 margin they used to defeat the Wildcats on Saturday afternoon. 

NOTABLES
- Wetherington led the Blue Hose with three hits as he tallied his second double of the season to lead PC offensively. 
- Fenderson tallied his first career multi-hit game for PC as he recorded one of the RBI singles Presbyterian finished with on Saturday.
- Kyle Decker, Gorman, and Wetherington have reached base safely in the first six games of the 2023 campaign. 
- Decker added a pair of stolen bases to increase his team lead to five steals on the campaign. 
- DiGiacomo continued his strong start to the season tossing six innings, allowing four hits and two runs, and striking out seven to earn his second win in as many starts. 
- Gibson followed suit from a week ago and recorded the final nine outs of the game, allowing just one hit and striking out four to earn his second save of the season.
- The Blue Hose improved to 3-1 on the season when outhitting their opponents after a 10-5 hit advantage on Saturday over Northwestern. 
- Saturday marked the first win for Presbyterian College over a Big 10 school since 2015, when PC defeated Indiana by the score of 5-2. 

UP NEXT
- The Blue Hose wrap up the weekend with their second straight meeting against a Big 10 opponent as Michigan State visits Clinton for a 1 p.m. start on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans earned a 13-6 win over USC Upstate on Friday before suffering a 7-3 defeat on Saturday against Gardner-Webb.
