CLEMSON, S.C. – The second-to-last nonconference encounter of the 2023 slate for the Presbyterian College lacrosse team simultaneously signified a first-time-ever matchup against Clemson, a start-up program resembling more of a powerhouse due to a position in the IWLCA's national rankings. In the end, the Tigers earned a 20-4 victory from their home turf on Wednesday afternoon.
Clocking in at #22 in the latest nationwide poll, Clemson assumed a 10-goal opening period on their way to the W, extending a fearsome reputation in non-ACC contests where they've won each of those by a minimum of 11 points. The home side reached a threshold of 20+ goals for the sixth time out of 12 appearances in their debut season, moving the Blue Hose to a 3-4 overall record with one pre-Big South date left.
NOTABLES
- A consistent bright spot for PC versus arguably the most explosive offensive attack in their path, senior midfielder
Abby Edmisten kept up a personal-best scoring streak with a trifecta of goals in two separate frames. The reigning Big South Offensive Player of the Week (an award already grasped twice in less than a month) needed just three minutes and 19 seconds to make an imprint on the contest, netting two more at the 13:30 and 1:53 stamps in the 3
rd.
- Following the season-opening bout at Coastal Carolina on Feb. 12, Edmisten has produced at least two goals in every single game since, beating out a five-game sequence of similar variety as a sophomore in 2021. The fourth-year scoring leader has now gathered 132 career points, four away from matching Brittni Dulaney (2007-10) for second all-time in PC history across that category.
-
Willow Hammond helped Edmisten give the Blue Hose a trio of goals in the 3
rd quarter on Wednesday, drawing in her 12
th strike of the campaign (the second-highest clip on the roster) sandwiched between Edmisten's second-half pair.
-
Lilly Phillips and
Naomi Lauderbaugh shared time at the goalkeepers' spot in the high-profile clash, the former roaming the field for over 32 minutes in her seventh start as a collegiate rookie.
- Six of PC's nine shot tries landed on-target when the dust settled, succeeding on 11 clears while grabbing eight ground ball recoveries and nine draw control wins. Both sides featured just one free position look in the Palmetto State duel, with Edmisten cashing in on that lone chance after intermission.
NEXT UP
- Head coach
Eric Clakeley and co. are nearing the end of a grueling stretch of road matchups spanning nearly a full month, awaiting the fourth straight outing away from home this Saturday against Queens which will mark the '23 nonconference finale.
- The third all-time meeting between the Carolina neighbors but first since the Royals joined the NCAA's Division I class, the weekend date will register as Queens' return to the fold after an 11-10 defeat at the hands of Robert Morris on the 18
th, a result that spoiled a four-game winning streak going in.
- Opening draw control in Charlotte is scheduled for noon.
