Lacrosse Bested by Five over Final Three Quarters at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – Hampering the flow of Saturday afternoon's late-season Big South Conference matchup with a lightning delay at the halfway point that lasted nearly 180 minutes, the Presbyterian College lacrosse team was outscored by the Longwood Lancers 7-4 after finally returning to the field for the ensuing 30:00 of game time. In the end, the Blue Hose took an 11-6 setback that moves them to 6-9 on the year.

Trailing by a deuce prior to mother nature's sustained interference, PC would not recover from a second-period shutout in the weekend loss, unable to repeat their last visit to Farmville in 2021 that registered as the program's first ever W over their Commonwealth opponent.

Now at one game under the .500 mark since league action kicked off on March 29, the Blue Hose hope to conclude the '23 journey on a major high note next week with a road trip to prominent Big South fixture Mercer and their last Clinton appearance against Furman.

NOTABLES
- Ever so close to even more PC history over her senior stint with head coach Eric Clakeley's roster, midfielder Abby Edmisten stayed persistent amidst the hostile environment with a three-goal effort, her eighth single-game performance of the season with that number or better and third straight with a trio.

- Starting with a one-second-left laser in the waning moments of the 1st and building on that by posting two 4th-period strikes, Edmisten barrels into the last pair of bouts this year needing just one more point to equal Catherine Ellis (2011-14) for the most accumulated in a Blue Hose career, currently holding 158. Additionally, the Georgian lacks only seven more goals to reach the summit of that category as well, also held by Ellis over the past nine years.

- Paige Gacek, Willow Hammond, and Madison Foti rounded out the rest of Presbyterian's point tally on Saturday during a contest that featured a 14-of-19 on-target shot rate from coach Clakeley's squad. Despite the L, true freshman Lilly Phillips inked a personal-high 14 saves at the keepers' spot, a position where she's started all 15 outings this semester.

- Normally a notorious offensive threat, junior Kylie Sullivan made her presence felt with three caused turnovers at her disposal alongside that same figure of groundball pickups. Penciled in as a starter for the second time in '23, Emily French was the catalyst for a couple of Longwood cough-ups while ending the day as one of six PC players with at least two loose-ball scoops.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edmisten and Foti carried the load in Clakeley's attack by each devising five looks at the net, allowing the Blue Hose a two-all tie with 15 minutes passed. The game's next four strikes came from the Lancers, however (two before and two after the lengthy delay), with PC breaking that trend on a woman-up opportunity by Gacek with the board reading 8:54 in the 3rd.

- Presbyterian's 0:01 blow as the opening stanza wrapped up signified the 10th time since February that Edmisten has cashed in within a period's final two minutes, as the senior picked up where she left off throughout the 4th on two more successful swings six minutes apart.

- Longwood wouldn't have been able to post the W had it not been for a last quarter that entailed five goals on their part, ultimately making up the difference in the meeting. The Lancers continuously kept the pressure on PC by hauling in 37 shot attempts and winning 13 of 20 draw control scenarios.

UP NEXT
- The last stop on Presbyterian's 10-game layout of road features, Wednesday's venture to Macon will represent a tall task for the Blue Hose against a Mercer foe that boasts a 13-2 resume and an eight-game winning streak.

- The Bears have rained down at least 18 scores in each of their last seven appearances, including a 16-goal decimation of Radford on Saturday that extended their perfect Big South record to 7-0.

- Opening draw on the 26th is scheduled for 4:00 PM and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
