Valiant Effort on Senior Day Falls Just Short in Lacrosse’s Season-Closer with Furman

CLINTON, S.C. – Taking their final four quarters of what turned into the most profitable win percentage over a single season in the history of the program, the Presbyterian College lacrosse team couldn't quite end the campaign with a W despite a strong showing opposite a quality Furman lineup, dropping a 16-11 decision to the Paladins at Bailey Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

By virtue of the defeat – a contest where PC held their Palmetto State neighbors seven goals below their prior two meetings – Presbyterian has been eliminated from Big South Tournament contention at 3-6 in league encounters. Only the league's top four schools advance to the postseason next weekend, whereas the Blue Hose entered the day in a three-way tie for the number five slot.

Madison Foti, Tayler Hofmeister, Paige Gacek, Emily French, Kendall Goldfarb, Sophie Sullinger, Ava Ward, and Taryn Tomas were all recognized in a pregame ceremony for their immense accomplishments towards the Blue Hose lacrosse program, all contributing in one way or another over the weekend in their final appearance for head coach Eric Clakeley.

NOTABLES
- While the biggest spotlight may have been on the seniors during their Clinton swansong, the sophomore/junior combo of Kylie Sullivan and Willow Hammond shined brightest on the offensive end with eight combined points (six scores with a pair of assists). Hammond in particular has proven that PC's future remains bright by putting together her third performance of 2023 with four goals or better against Big South opponents.

- Already the most effective two-player duo ever seen by Presbyterian in their 15-year Division I past, Hammond and midfielder Abby Edmisten completed the semester with the exact same number of goals scored (40) and only one point away from parallel stats across the board. A grand total of 107 points were collected by that duo in 17 outings, thrusting a .723 shot-on-goal percentage between them.

- A seemingly-permanent fixture in the Blue Hose's major highlights since her arrival to campus in 2020, Edmisten now stands alone in the school record books by tallying her 160th career point with a single second left in the opening stanza. Passing Catherine Ellis (2011-14) to solidify her status as an all-time great PC goal-getter and distributor, Edmisten put an end to a near-decade long streak of the previous record reigning supreme.

- Seven different players for Clakeley's roster notched at least one goal in the '23 curtain call while Foti, Sullinger, Ward, and Hofmeister all contributed to the board at different periods in the contest. Additionally, true freshman Avery West gathered the fifth strike of her debut campaign and second-year midfielder Mackenzie Partsch bumped up her career goal count to eight with a 7:35 final period swing.

- Remaining in the net for all 60 minutes of a matchup that adopted a breakneck pace (climbing to 70 total shots between the warring sides), first-year keeper Lilly Phillips ended her freshman stint with 13 rejections – one off a career-best – to giver her 132 collectively since February, the fourth-most over a single year from a Blue Hose member. As a rookie, the Georgian was penciled in as a starter for every bout on PC's path.

- Gacek concluded her last round with the program in fifth-place all-time by corralling her 120th ground ball in the 3rd quarter. The fifth-year defenseman saw an increase in total wins from the year prior on three separate occasions including this spring, signing off with the team's highest number of W's ever.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After striking first with just over six minutes gone by, Presbyterian was unable to slow down a brisk-moving Furman attack that piled on six unanswered scores before the frame had come to its resting place. Edmisten's assist to Hofmeister as the clock read 0:01 briefly stopped the hemorrhaging and allowed the Blue Hose to reach a three-score streak of their own that lasted until the 4:27 clip in the 2nd.

- Only able to carve into that initial five-goal deficit by one as both sides retired to the locker rooms, coach Clakeley's club witnessed all four of Hammond's strikes over the final half-hour of game time, enough to equal Ellis' 2012 single-season record by boosting her point total to 54.

- PC scattered seven scores in the second half of Saturday's last chapter, securing goal number 149 on the year with 3:13 to go off the stick of Sullivan that was assisted by Mickey Paredes.
