Seven-Run Fifth Keys Season Finale Win over Highlanders

RADFORD, VA. – The Presbyterian College baseball team was able to shake off a fast start from Radford and used the power of a seven-run fifth to carry the Blue Hose past the Highlanders 13-7 on Saturday at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium. The offensive attack was led by Jack Gorman and Dalton Reeves with four RBIs apiece as Reeves connected on a pair of homers in the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Highlanders got on the board first with a run in the opening inning to gain the early advantage on Saturday.
- Radford pushed across three more runs in the second that increased the hosts' lead to 4-0 after two innings.
- The hosts pushed across a pair of runs in the third that increased the lead to 6-0 after three frames.
- PC got on the board in the fourth with a Reeves two-run homer to cut the deficit to four, 6-2 after 3.5 innings.
- The Blue Hose continued the climb back in the fifth as Trey Fenderson connected on an RBI single before a sacrifice fly from Jack Gorman cut it to a 6-4 game.
- Presbyterian continued the offense with a Brody Fahr RBI single before Reeves connected on a two-run homer to push PC in front 7-6. The seven-run frame was capped with a Chase Hughes two-run double to make it 9-6 for the guests.
- The Highlanders pushed across a run in the seventh to cut it to a 9-7 Blue Hose lead. 
- PC stretched the lead back out to 11-7 in the eighth inning with an RBI double from Gorman before Ryan Ouzts tallied an RBI double of his own to stretch the lead to four runs. 
- Gorman capped the scoring on Saturday with a two-run double in the ninth as the Blue Hose clinched the series with a 13-7 victory over the Highlanders. 
  
NOTABLES
- Fahr capped his 2023 season with 73 hits after adding a base hit to his stat line on Saturday in the win. He finishes the season with a .361 average which is the best single-season batting average performance by a PC player since 2015 when Cam McRae hit .364.
- He also posted a .398 average in Big South play which is the best mark by a Blue Hose since 2018 when Jonathan White hit .404 in league play.
- Gorman picked up his 15th multi-hit game of the season on Saturday with three hits which included a pair of doubles and a season-high four runs knocked in. Gorman finished the 2023 season with a team-high 16 doubles including his two in the season-finale victory.
- Ouzts joined the three-hit group for his eighth multi-hit game of the season as the Blue Hose outfielder tallied a double in the victory.
- Reeves tallied a pair of homers for the second time on the weekend to finish his season with a team-high 12 homers along with 48 runs knocked in on the season.
- He also set a Big South program record for homers and RBI in a league slate with nine homers and 35 RBIs. Reeves also set the program's Big South record for slugging percentage in a season at .592. He finished tied for second in the single-season DI record book with his 12 homers.
- Reeves moved into a tie for fifth on Saturday in the PC single-season DI record book with his 48 RBIs on the season.
- Kyle Mueller came out of the bullpen and tossed 3.2 shutout innings scattering only two hits and striking out two to earn his sixth victory of the season. Mueller also has become the second player in the Blue Hose Big South history to go a perfect 5-0 joining Jackson Dean in 2019 to reach the milestone.
- As a team, the Blue Hose compiled 54 homers on the season including eight in the final series with the Highlanders. The 54 homers hit in the 2023 season marks the most by a PC team since 2009 when the Blue Hose connected on 57 big flies.
- The PC pitching staff recorded 408 strikeouts on the season marking the second straight year a PC pitching staff has recorded at least 400 strikeouts and the third Presbyterian program in the DI era to finish with 400+ punchouts.
- PC connected on multiple homers for the 15th time this season with Reeves's two in back-to-back innings on Saturday.
