Blue Hose Stay Strong on D, Takes 1-0 Defeat at Georgia State

ATLANTA, Ga. – For the third time in four appearances at the nonconference schedule's midpoint, the Presbyterian College women's soccer team accounted for a 1-0 decision on the scoreboard after 90 minutes of play. Unfortunately, each of those single-score clips has favored the outside party as the Blue Hose drew the short end of a 1-0 loss at Georgia State on Sunday evening.

Content to let their defensive scheme carry the bulk of the load against a Sun Belt opponent that has yet to take a loss on the year, PC limited GSU to a sole goal after the Panthers put up 16 combined during their first three meetings.

The cost of that stout back line ended up being a miniscule showing – on paper, at least – in the attack where the Blue Hose were outdone in the shots department 13-4.

Head coach Brian Purcell and co. will cross back into Palmetto territory and their home base this Thursday for their fifth pre-Big South duel. A first-time-ever series against Navy awaits at Martin Stadium on the last day of August.

FINAL SCORE: Georgia State, 1 – Presbyterian, 0

HOW IT HAPPENED

- As had been the case in close setbacks to Furman and Kennesaw State last week, a single slipup essentially decided the contest (this one at the 37:18 stamp). Georgia State's Maddie Johnston received a lead-in pass from Bree Barley that provided the avenue for the 1-0 lead, a score that remained the rest of the way.

- Junior keeper Kelly Hall was a constant thorn in GSU's side on Sunday, amassing six saves (just two shy of a single-game personal high) while staying in the box for the full 90. Three of those stops came in the last 22 minutes of action, maintaining the one-goal margin with aplomb.

- Picking their spots for the most opportune situation to tie things up, PC registered its first second-half shot in a crowd by Gwen Keiser, followed by another look at the net by sophomore Hannah Austin in the 74th minute.

- Panther GK Jaddah Foos earned most-valuable-player honors for the home side based off the final seven-and-a-half minutes alone, getting a hand on two rockets by Emilia Lieber and Lina-Marie Müller. The second of those attempts came with under a minute left, saving a win from turning into a deadlock at the eleventh hour.

- After assuming a season-best nine corner kick chances in Friday's shutout over Columbia International, the Blue Hose tallied five more in the Peach State's capital (all of which were second-half instances).

- Coincidentally, each of Presbyterian's affairs to this point in 2023 have resulted in one party conceding zero goals. While coach Purcell's club was unsuccessful in their comeback try, the squad's effort can be commended against an unbeaten foe in a hostile environment.

UP NEXT

- Aiming to ramp up their offensive numbers to help compliment their efficiency on the opposite end of the field, PC returns to Clinton in four days to face off with the Midshipmen in a never-before-seen mix. First touch at Martin Stadium is set for 7:00 PM on ESPN+.

- Opening the campaign with a 2-1 triumph over Charleston Southern, Navy has been forced to settle for a tie in each of their last three meetings including Sunday. A scoreless sequence against St. John's preceded a shootout at Maryland four days later (3-3), leading to another stalemate versus Ohio in a 1-1 ruling.
