PC’s Defensive Showcase Leads to Victory Over Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Presbyterian College Blue Hose women's basketball team (11-7, BSC: 2-1) beat the Winthrop Eagles (7-9, BSC: 1-2) 59-43 on the road Wednesday night.

COACH SHARP'S THOUGHTS
"Our defense was so good, it was suffocating. I thought we did a great job of keeping them off the free throw line. They are a great offensive rebounding team, we gave them 12 offensive rebounds, but when we needed stops I thought we got them. Anytime they were about to make a run we really stepped up with our defense.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – The Eagles won the opening tip and took the first basket of the game. A steal by Mara Neira led to a layup by Tilda Sjökvist to even out the score at two points apiece. The Blue Hose went on to take two three-point buckets behind Sjökvist and Neira, this gave Presby an early 8-2 lead. Winthrop scored the next 13 points which gave them a seven-point lead with a score of 15-8. Sjökvist hit another corner three to end the Eagle's run which led to the Blue Hose scoring nine unanswered points behind back to back threes from Neira. Presbyterian came out on top after the first quarter with a score of 19-15.

Second Quarter – Winthrop made the first basket of the second quarter, but Christina Kline answered with her first three-pointer of the game. The Eagles took two more points, but Neira hit another three to put the Blue Hose lead at 25-19. PC scored four of the next six points before Winthrop called a timeout with 2:19 left in the first half and a score of 29-21. The Eagles scored the last four points of the half, but Presbyterian held a four-point lead with a halftime score of 29-25.

Third Quarter – Bryanna Brady scored the first basket of the second half, but Winthrop answered with a layup of their own. Again, Neira swished a three-point shot which gave PC a seven-point lead with a score of 34-27. Winthrop took a fast break layup, but Neira stayed hot with her sixth three-point bucket of the night. After some back and forth Paige Kindseth scored a three-point bucket which sent us to the media timeout at 1:34 with PC ahead by 13 points and a score of 44-31. The third quarter ended with Presbyterian leading by 13 points with a score of 46-33.

Fourth Quarter – The Eagles scored the first two points of the fourth quarter, but PC then went on a nine-point run to extend their lead to 20 points with four minutes left in the game. Winthrop took the next six points, but Neira scored a three-point basket to hold a 17-point lead. Ultimately, the Blue Hose walked away with a 59-43 win over Winthrop.
