Defense Excels as Presby Posts Scoreless Tie at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team's conference-best defense showed why it's at the top of all the league statistical rankings by keeping Longwood off the scoreboard for the full 90 minutes on Saturday afternoon. A 0-0 draw was the final result, PC's third tie in a Big South setting.

Head coach Matt Smith's club – despite being stung very hard by the injury bug as of late – remains steadily resilient, recording their third shutout of 2024.

That's the ninth shutout in the stellar career of senior goalie Kelly Hall (three blank sheets per season since 2022), matching Sarah Beth Anderson (2008-11) for the most in PC's 17-year Division I era.

Although the Lancers were able to outgun the Blue Hose on the attack (12-7 in total shots), Hall and the rest of the back line made up for that differential by pulling in six saves and never letting Longwood produce the equalizer.

Now with six points to their credit when charting the Big South standings – and needing to stay inside the top six in order to gain a postseason ticket – the Scotsmen will play their final two regular season matches next week from their home site.

NOTABLES

- Saturday was the first time that a Presbyterian match ended in a scoreless stalemate since 2022. Coincidentally, the Blue Hose had two of those nil-nil decisions in a row when that last occurred against ETSU and Alabama State.

- Five of PC's seven looks at the net came from the leg of junior Sloan Spees, who guided three shots on-goal. Sarah Dieffenderfer and Isabel Lasota were the others in garnet and blue to gather an on-target attempt.

- Other than Hall, five Presby players logged a full 90-minute shift. None of PC's starting defenders left the field at any point during the shutout, including junior Lauren Clark who submitted her first start of the semester.

- Longwood's last gasp at breaking the zero-zero score came at 89:24, a boot that hooked wide left of the mark.

UP NEXT

- UNC Asheville and Radford will both visit Martin Stadium next week as coach Smith's gang enjoys the luxury of home field advantage down the stretch. First touch against the Bulldogs is scheduled for 7:00 on Wednesday, October 23.

- When analyzing the all-time series between the Blue Hose and UNCA, a jarring number that jumps out is the fact that neither team has beaten the other twice in a row through the last seven meetings.

- Prior to a USC Upstate visit on Saturday, the Bulldogs' most recent effort was a 2-0 W over Gardner-Webb, displaying those goals near the very beginning and the very end of that contest.
