NACOGDOCHES, Texas. – Behind
Jonah Pierce's double-double, the Presbyterian Blue Hose (3-3) rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (2-3), 58-55, in overtime on the road on Thursday evening.
Pierce led all scorers with 15 points while grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.
Kory Mincy scored 11 points.
Carl Parrish scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Kobe Stewart added nine points and six rebounds to the Blue Hose's efforts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF – Stephen F. Austin scored the game's first six points. Pierce got the Blue Hose on the board converting on a tough contested layup. Pierce's basket started a 7-0 Blue Hose run giving PC a 7-6 lead after
Iverson King scored inside with 14:35 on the clock. Mincy also connected on a three during PC's scoring run. The lead exchanged hands a couple of times over the next five minutes with a couple of ties. With 9:57 on the clock, SFA took the first half lead for good with a basket in the paint. The Lumberjacks pushed their lead to 30-19 with a minute left in the half. A three from Parrish with 57 seconds on the clock cut SFA's halftime lead to 30-22.
SECOND HALF – The Blue Hose began the second half on fire with an 8-0 scoring run capped off by two free throws from Stewart which tied the score at 30 with 16:14 on the clock. Pierce scored the other six points during Presbyterian's run. Then, Stephen F. Austin scored seven straight points regaining the lead. The Blue Hose were trailing 40-33 with 12:14 on the clock after a three-point field goal from
Quadir Pettaway and a fast break layup from Parrish the Blue Hose got back to within two points. The Lumberjacks maintained a lead of 2-6 points until
Kaleb Scott made a free throw with 3:47 on the clock tying the score at 50. Then, Pierce scored inside pushing the Blue Hose in front. The Lumberjacks tied the score at 52 with a basket in the paint from Matt Hayman with 25 seconds on the clock. The Blue Hose had a chance to win the game in regulation but the Blue Hose could not convert on a shot in the final seconds of regulation.
OVERTIME – Presbyterian seized control of the game after two free throws from
Jaylen Peterson and a jumper in the lane by Mincy gave the Blue Hose the lead for good, 56-52, with 3:50 left in overtime. Parrish made two free throws with five seconds on the clock, which sealed the road win for the Blue Hose.
NOTES
- Pierce's double-double was his second of the season and the third of his career. Pierce's 15 points marked his fourth double-figure scoring game of the season and the 13th of his Presbyterian career.
- Mincy's 11 points was his fifth double-digit scoring game of the season and the 11th of his career.
- Parrish's six rebounds, which included a couple of big defensive rebounds in the closing minutes of overtime, was a career-high tally. Parrish's 11 points was his fourth double-figure scoring game of the season and the sixth of his career.
- The overtime win marked Presbyterian's first overtime win since defeating The Citadel, 74-70, in double overtime on November 15, 2021.
